Danish lawmakers are questioning a military base agreement with the United States after a new intelligence report suggested that the U.S. could pose a security threat to Denmark’s interests. The debate exposes growing unease about the balance between dependence on American protection and concerns over national sovereignty.
New Danish Intelligence Report Sparks Political Uproar
A new assessment from the Danish Defense Intelligence Service (FE) has shaken the political landscape in Copenhagen. The report highlighted that the United States is now using its economic and technological power to exert pressure, even on allies. That finding has sparked fresh criticism of Denmark’s recently approved defense cooperation agreement with Washington.
According to opponents from parties like the Red-Green Alliance and the Alternative, the intelligence review shows why the defense pact needs to be reconsidered. They argue that Denmark has allowed a superpower, which its own defense service labels a growing risk, to station troops and equipment on Danish soil under a deal that cannot be canceled for ten years.
A Controversial Deal That Divides Parliament
The defense agreement was passed by a broad majority in June 2024, giving the United States permission to use Danish bases and deploy personnel across several military sites. Only a few parties, including the Alternative, the Red-Green Alliance, and the Citizens’ Party, opposed the move.
Supporters said the treaty would strengthen national defense, especially amid growing instability in Europe and rising threats from Russia and China. Critics, however, warned that the deal gave U.S. forces unprecedented legal rights in Denmark. According to a parliamentary briefing, American forces can exercise authority over civilians in some cases if it’s deemed necessary for military operations. That clause has reignited debates about Denmark’s sovereignty.
Fears of Influence Campaigns and Policy Pressure
For some lawmakers, the issue goes beyond the physical presence of American troops. They fear potential influence operations targeting Danish political decisions or public debate. Several have described the setup as risky, arguing that Washington’s shifting policies under changing administrations could leave Denmark exposed.
The timing also complicates matters. The current base agreement was negotiated under President Joe Biden, but a new political direction in Washington may already be testing Europe’s dependence on American defense commitments. That uncertainty, according to some analysts, puts Denmark in a “strategic dilemma” it cannot easily escape.
Government Parties Defend the U.S. Alliance
The Social Democrats, Venstre, and the Danish People’s Party continue to stand by the deal. They insist that despite the new threat analysis, Denmark remains reliant on American support for deterrence and security collaboration. Officials argue that now is the time to strengthen both national and European defense capabilities, not to sever ties with Washington.
Social Democratic defense spokesperson Simon Kollerup emphasized that Denmark must take the evolving global situation seriously but maintain cooperation with its longtime ally wherever possible. In his view, the U.S. remains a “trusted partner,” and withdrawing from the deal would be counterproductive.
The Danish People’s Party points to Russia, China, and extremist ideologies as greater threats than those posed by the United States. They warn that shifting attention to American relations could distract from the real dangers facing Europe and Denmark.
A Tight Spot for Danish Security Policy
The intelligence report has also triggered warnings from defense experts. A former senior analyst at the Defense Intelligence Service called the situation “a major predicament,” noting that Denmark now hosts foreign soldiers who ultimately take orders from another country’s political leadership. This division of loyalty, he argued, creates uncertainty about how Denmark would handle potential conflicts of interest in the future.
Despite the concern, there is no easy way out. Ending the agreement could harm Denmark’s credibility as a NATO partner and complicate defense planning at a time when European security is under renewed strain. On the other hand, sustaining the deal means accepting a level of dependency that some see as risky in an era of unpredictable international politics.
In the end, both critics and supporters appear to agree on at least one thing: Denmark must urgently rethink its long-term defense strategy and define how much autonomy it is willing to trade for security guarantees from larger allies.
