Moving to Denmark is an exciting but logistically complex undertaking that rewards careful planning and thorough preparation. The immigration route into Denmark depends on your nationality and circumstances.

EU and EEA citizens enjoy freedom of movement and can register as Danish residents relatively straightforwardly through the EU Citizens Registration system at their local Statsforvaltning (or via the International Citizen Service in major cities). Non-EU citizens must obtain the appropriate visa or residence permit before arriving, with options including the Work Permit under the Positive List or Pay Limit Scheme, the Researcher Scheme, the Fast-track Scheme for companies with approved certification, the Family Reunification permit for those joining a Danish or settled partner or family member, and student visas for those enrolled at a Danish educational institution.

Once in Denmark with the right to reside, the first practical steps include registering your address at your local Borgerservice (Citizens’ Service Centre), obtaining your CPR number, setting up a NemKonto bank account linked to your CPR number, activating your Digital Post inbox (the Danish government’s official digital communication channel), and obtaining a MitID digital identity credential for accessing public services online.

Finding housing before you arrive or very shortly after is critical, particularly in Copenhagen where the rental market is extremely competitive. Bringing belongings from abroad involves customs procedures, shipping logistics, and decisions about storage.

Choosing which city in Denmark to live in is itself an important decision, with Copenhagen offering the most international environment and the widest professional opportunities but also the highest costs, while cities like Aarhus, Odense, Aalborg, and Esbjerg offer excellent quality of life, strong job markets in specific sectors, lower costs, and a more intimate community feel.

Moving to Denmark is ultimately the beginning of one of life’s great adventures, a journey into one of the world’s most functional, beautiful, and quietly extraordinary societies.
