Milling Hotels buys 4 properties in Denmark expansion

Milling Hotels has agreed to buy four hotels from the Halberg group based in Svendborg, expanding the family chain to 16 hotels in Denmark. The takeover is due to be completed on October 1, 2026.

Avisen Danmark reports that the Odense chain, founded and still led by Jan and Dorte Milling, is making its largest acquisition ever measured in financial terms. The couple own and run the company together with their children.

Three of the four hotels are in Svendborg. They are the four star Hotel Svendborg with 135 rooms, Hotel Garni with 28 rooms and Hotel Ærø with 67 rooms. The fourth is Hotel Fredericia in Fredericia, which has 118 rooms.

According to Avisen Danmark, the seller is the Halberg group in Svendborg, which is winding down its hotel division through the transaction. Once the deal closes, Milling Hotels will operate 16 hotels across the country. The purchase comes shortly after the chain bought Hotel Knudsens Gård in Odense.

Jan Milling told Avisen Danmark that the acquisition is a big mouthful to take on at once. He described the properties as well run and well maintained, and said they can contribute profit from day one. Nothing needs fixing operationally, but the many employees must be integrated into Milling’s organization, per the same interview.

What other sources say about the hotels

The official history page of Halberg Hotels, published on the Hotel Ærø website, confirms that Hotel Fredericia has 118 rooms after renovation and expansion. The same page states that Hotel Ærø was Halberg’s fourth hotel purchase, acquired in 2022 with 62 rooms and apartments. That 2022 figure differs slightly from the 67 rooms reported by Avisen Danmark.

Halberg’s corporate site, Halberg A/S, lists the Svendborg hotels and Hotel Fredericia as a separate business area within the group. The listing matches the four properties now changing hands.

Background to the sale

Byens Ejendom reported in December 2025 that Halberg, the tobacco and food group behind Løgismose, was selling its properties in Svendborg. The portfolio was valued at around 500 million kroner, according to that report, which described a wider move to reduce the group’s exposure in the town.

On the buyer’s side, EjendomsWatch reported in March 2024 that Milling Hotels was actively looking for further hotel purchases around Denmark. The family group had about 10 hotels at that time. Milling Hotels also announced a new hotel in Vejle on its own website in 2025.

Avisen Danmark states that the closing date for the four hotels is October 1, 2026. No purchase price or financing details have been made public.
