Train delays hit Funen for weeks after Aarup fire

A fire in a railway technical hut at Aarup Station on Funen has left train traffic between Odense and Fredericia hit by cancellations and delays throughout the weekend.

Travelers using trains between Odense and Fredericia this weekend will need patience, DR reports. The broadcaster writes that the fire broke out in a technical hut at Aarup Station on Friday morning, and that delays and replacement buses will continue all weekend, according to information published by DSB.

Per DR, regional trains are not running at all between Odense and Fredericia, and train buses have been brought in instead. InterCity trains, express trains and international trains are still operating, but with delays, because they pass the section at Aarup at reduced speed.

Banedanmark reports destroyed signalling equipment

According to Banedanmark, trains have to be moved through Aarup at 40 kilometers per hour. The state rail infrastructure manager states that the hut, which controlled signals and points, was destroyed, causing extensive damage to the signalling system.

Banedanmark also states that the cause of the fire is still unknown, and that there is no indication it was started deliberately. The agency says restoring normal traffic will be a lengthy process, and that it cannot yet give a precise timetable.

TV 2 Fyn reports that Banedanmark expects the disruption to last a long time, and that the repairs could take several weeks. The outlet notes that passengers traveling during the autumn holiday should check Rejseplanen before setting out.

As reported by Politiken, the fire led to cancellations and delays across the country on Friday. The newspaper explains that a signalling hut of this kind contains the electronics and equipment used to operate the railway signalling system.

What the Funen disruption means for international commuters and travelers

Two different organizations are involved here, and the split matters when reading updates. Banedanmark owns and maintains the tracks, signals and points, while DSB operates the trains and publishes service changes on its traffic information pages. A togbus, the word used in Danish announcements, is a bus that replaces a cancelled train on a specific stretch.

For foreign residents who commute across Funen, the practical effect is that no regional trains run between Odense and Fredericia, and replacement buses are used instead, as DR reports. Long-distance and international services continue, but with delays caused by the 40 kilometer per hour restriction at Aarup. Journey planning information in English is available through Rejseplanen, the national journey planner that covers trains, buses and metro.

Banedanmark has not said when normal service will resume, and TV 2 Fyn reports that the work could take several weeks. That means train travel between Funen and Jutland, including trips toward Copenhagen or south toward the German border, may stay affected beyond this weekend. Anyone traveling during the coming autumn holiday period should check Rejseplanen and DSB’s traffic information for the current status, as TV 2 Fyn notes.
