DSB says passengers between Odense and Fredericia should expect longer journey times for all of week 42, until Sunday, October 18, after a fire in a railway signalling hut near Aarup on West Funen.
According to DR, DSB posted the notice on its website on Monday afternoon, October 12, 2026. All regional trains on the stretch between Odense and Fredericia have been replaced by rail replacement buses, known in Danish as togbusser.
International trains, InterCityLyn and InterCity services are still running, DSB states in the same notice. On parts of the route, however, those trains run at reduced speed, which adds to journey times across the country.
A signalling hut fire and a fallen tree
The delays stem from a fire that broke out on Friday, October 9, in a signalling hut at the West Funen railway town of Aarup. As DR explains, a signalling hut is a small technical building beside the track that holds electronics and equipment for the railway’s signalling system.
The incident created signalling faults on the line between Middelfart and Odense. That has caused larger disruptions to train traffic on Funen and between the regions of Denmark.
Early on Monday morning, train traffic between Odense and Fredericia was suspended entirely in both directions. Per Fyns Politi, a tree had fallen across an overhead contact line on West Funen. Around 6 a.m., InterCity and InterCityLyn services between the regions resumed, while regional trains remained replaced by buses.
Banedanmark points to extensive damage
Banedanmark, the state agency that owns and maintains the Danish rail network, said on bane.dk on October 9 that the fire caused extensive damage. The agency stated that fewer trains would run on West Funen for an extended period.
As reported by Politiken, Banedanmark indicated the damage could take several weeks to repair, with no timetable yet for a return to normal service. TV 2 Fyn noted that the agency warned on October 9 of delays and cancellations for a long time ahead, and advised travelers during the autumn holiday to check Rejseplanen.
What the Funen rail disruption means for internationals traveling in Denmark
Two organizations are involved, and they do different jobs. Banedanmark is responsible for the tracks, overhead lines and signalling equipment, while DSB operates the trains and publishes the service information. Week 42 is also the Danish school autumn holiday, efterårsferie, which is one of the busiest weeks of the year for domestic travel.
The Odense to Fredericia stretch is part of the main line connecting Zealand with Jutland, so trains between Copenhagen and cities such as Aarhus cross it. Internationals with trips booked this week should expect longer travel times until October 18, per DSB, and regional journeys on West Funen will be made by bus. Banedanmark, via TV 2 Fyn, pointed travelers to Rejseplanen, the national journey planner at rejseplanen.dk, for current departures.
The disruption concerns long-distance and regional rail on Funen, not local city networks such as Copenhagen public transport. What is not yet known is when full service will return. As of the sources cited here, neither DSB nor Banedanmark has given a date beyond the week 42 notice, and Banedanmark has said repairs could take several weeks.
