Denmark is placing over 100,000 tons of Norwegian stone onto the seabed near Assens to rebuild marine habitats destroyed by stone fishing in the 1960s. The project, one of Denmark’s largest reef restorations, will turn Assens Havn into a logistics hub for the next four months.
Eighteen Norwegian cargo ships are now arriving at Lillebælt with stones the size of basketballs. Each vessel carries 4,500 tons. The stones will be offloaded at Assens Havn and then barged out to three underwater sites near Helnæs and Lyø.
This is industrial scale marine restoration. And it’s happening right now in Denmark’s coastal waters.
Why Denmark is rebuilding the seabed
The project targets areas where fishing crews in the 1960s hauled up stone from the bottom of Lillebælt. Those stones had created habitat for algae, crabs, fish and anemones. When they were taken, the ecosystem lost structure.
Miljøstyrelsen is now putting the stones back. Three reefs will be restored: five hectares at Helnæs Nord, 3.5 hectares at Helnæs Syd, and two hectares at Lyø. Project leader Rune Nielsen says the goal is to bring back biodiversity that was lost when the seabed was stripped bare.
What this looks like on the ground
Assens Havn has become a construction site. The first ship docked on August 17. Over the next three to four months, two to three specialized barges will depart daily to place stones offshore.
Harbour chief Ole Knudsen told reporters that the vessels are close to the maximum size the port can handle. The north quay is closed to visitors. Safety is the priority, he says, both for ships entering the port and for workers moving meter wide stones on the dock.
The stones will be placed strategically on the seabed. Some will be scattered, others stacked to create caves. The idea is to give sea creatures shelter and feeding grounds.
This is part of a national restoration wave
Assens is not an isolated project. Denmark has committed 140 million kroner through Havnaturfonden for large scale marine restoration work. Another 80 million kroner was allocated in the 2026 to 2030 Green Denmark agreement.
Similar reef projects have been completed or are underway at Taarbæk, Gilleleje, Nivå, Køge Bugt and Storebælt. The government frames this as creating “breathing spaces” in the ocean for species like cod and lumpfish.
This is no longer experimental. It is national policy.
The local angle matters too
Assens is not just a logistics hub. The municipality is building VANDVID, a marine nature experience center on the harbour. Construction starts this spring and finishes in summer 2027.
The center will feature stone structures and fish platforms along the waterfront. That means visitors will see both the exhibition inside and the actual restoration work happening offshore. Assens is betting on marine restoration as a brand, not just an environmental obligation.
But the harbour will also be busier and more industrial for months. That trade off is real for locals and sailors who normally use the port.
Does this actually work?
The scientific logic is solid. Hard substrate creates niches for algae and invertebrates. Those organisms attract fish. Fish attract seals and seabirds. Rebuild the base, and the food web follows.
But Miljøstyrelsen has also said that earlier reef projects required geological surveys to confirm the seabed could support the weight. Placement matters. Stones must create roughness and cavities, not just flat piles.
The larger question is whether adding stones can offset ongoing damage from nutrients, bottom trawling and warming water. Danish marine policy treats restoration as a supplement to water quality regulation, not a replacement. That distinction often gets lost in public messaging.
What it means for Denmark’s marine future
I have lived in Denmark long enough to see how environmental policy evolves here. This is not symbolic. The state is committing serious money, multi year timelines and real logistics to put physical structure back on the seabed.
The Assens project is proof that marine restoration has moved from pilot programs to industrial execution. The government is sourcing stone from Norway, staging it through regional harbours, and rebuilding habitats at scale.
Whether it succeeds ecologically will take years to measure. But politically, this is already a success. Denmark is physically reversing decades of seabed extraction. That sends a signal, both domestically and to other coastal nations.
The stones hitting the water near Assens are heavy. So is the ambition behind them.
