Danish Series The Asset is the New Global Netflix Sensation

The Danish crime thriller “The Asset” has become a global sensation on Netflix. It earned over 11 million views during its debut week and swiftly climbed to the top of the platform’s non-English-language charts. The new Danish series is the latest in a growing line of Danish Netflix successes.

Breakout Success for Danish Series

The Danish crime drama series “The Asset” (“Legenden” in Danish) has captivated worldwide audiences. It has become the most-watched non-English series on Netflix during its premiere week. Released on October 27, the show garnered a staggering 11.3 million global views in its first seven days. Even surpassing popular English-language shows, like Season 2 of the romantic comedy “Nobody Wants This.”

The Danish series, set in Copenhagen, follows a young trainee agent within Denmark’s security intelligence service (PET) named Tea, played by Clara Dessau. She is sent undercover as a used jewelry dealer to infiltrate an international criminal network. Her task forces her into a morally complex world. As she gets closer to Ashley, the wife of a drug cartel kingpin, she is led into a series of twists, double lives, and a deep internal struggle.

Plot and Production Highlights

“The Asset” weaves a gripping mix of suspense, undercover operations, and human dilemmas. Tea’s journey takes her from a police academy to a treacherous underworld dominated by crime and deception. Navigating between loyalty and betrayal, the show’s narrative holds audiences through its six fast-paced episodes.

The series pairs strong directorial vision with character-driven storytelling. It is directed by Kasper Barfoed with Samanou Acheche Sahlstrøm serving as the lead conceptual director. In addition to Dessau in the lead role, Maria Cordsen stars as Ashley, the complex and emotionally layered wife of criminal leader Miran, portrayed by Afshin Firouzi. Nicolas Bro rounds out the cast as Folke, Tea’s superior in PET.

Filmed primarily in Denmark, the show combines Nordic noir aesthetics with slick, cinematic visuals. This helps its appeal to both local and international viewers.

Global Acclaim and Local Legacy for Danish Series

“The Asset” is the latest in a growing line of Danish Netflix successes. It follows in the footsteps of other international hits like the post-apocalyptic series “The Rain,” which amassed 30 million viewers globally. Also, the eerie crime drama “The Chestnut Man,” which made top ten lists in more than 50 countries.

Furthermore, earlier this year, the Danish miniseries “The Reservation” became one of the most streamed Netflix titles in the first half of 2025, reaching 34 million views. This string of successes underscores Denmark’s growing reputation for producing high-quality, globally appealing content.

“The Asset” has received favorable reviews from both Danish and international outlets. British tabloid Daily Mail dubbed it a “must-watch,” while Time Magazine published an in-depth breakdown of all episodes, though readers are warned of spoilers. On Rotten Tomatoes, users have given it a solid 83 percent rating, indicating strong audience approval.

Critical Reception Across the Board

Danish critics have also reacted positively to the series. The media outlet Soundvenue praised the character development, calling Clara Dessau’s performance “authentic and touching,” particularly highlighting how she portrays Tea’s internal battles. Maria Cordsen’s portrayal of Ashley has been described as emotionally captivating and even scene-stealing.

Berlingske, another major Danish news outlet, awarded the series four out of six stars, noting its strong script structure and clever narrative pacing. Though the show doesn’t revolutionize the genre, it offers finely tuned suspense and emotional depth that keeps audiences on edge.

As a whole, “The Asset” solidifies Denmark’s role as a rising power in global television production. Its success reflects not only the growing international appetite for Nordic noir. It also demonstrates Denmark’s ability to craft stories that transcend language and cultural barriers. With Netflix continuing to invest in original productions from smaller countries, “The Asset” may be just the latest in a long list of international hits coming from the Danish film and television industry.
