Denmark Boosts Security After Sydney Terror Attack

Following the recent terror attack near Bondi Beach in Sydney, Danish authorities have reinforced security at Jewish and Israeli locations, as well as Christmas markets across Denmark. The national threat level remains unchanged.

Heightened Attention Across Denmark

After the tragic incident in Sydney, where several people were killed in a suspected anti-Semitic attack at a Hanukkah celebration, the Danish Security and Intelligence Service (PET) announced new precautionary steps.

PET and the National Police have increased security measures around Jewish institutions such as the synagogue in Krystalgade, Copenhagen, and around well-attended Christmas markets. The authorities clarified that these actions are part of an effort to maintain awareness, not because of any specific new threat in Denmark.

At the same time, the overall terror threat level in Denmark remains at level four out of five — “serious.” PET confirmed there are no current indications that require raising the level further.

The Attack in Sydney

Early Sunday, Danish time, a violent terror attack unfolded near Bondi Beach in Sydney. Two armed men reportedly opened fire on a Hanukkah celebration attended by roughly one thousand members of the Jewish community. According to Australian police, at least twelve people lost their lives, including one of the suspected attackers, while the other remains critically injured.

Because of this international incident, PET responded by implementing immediate precautions within Denmark. The service emphasized that while global events can influence the country’s vigilance, there is no direct link between the attack and Denmark at this stage.

In recent months, several Danish cities have already reinforced protective measures in connection with public venues and events. These include similar actions seen during major incidents such as widespread cyberattacks that previously targeted hospitals and municipalities, highlighting how preparedness is an ongoing concern.

Reactions in Denmark

Denmark’s Jewish community has expressed gratitude that the authorities acted swiftly to secure key sites. Local religious leaders in Copenhagen said that while the situation abroad is deeply disturbing, they feel that Denmark’s institutions are taking the threat seriously.

Several Danish political figures have also expressed condolences. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said she was deeply moved by the news from Australia and extended sympathy to the victims’ families. She emphasized that Denmark stands with Australia and the Jewish community affected by the attack.

The Danish royal family also issued a message on social media. The statement from King Frederik and Queen Mary said they were profoundly touched by the tragic events and extended condolences to the Australian people and those impacted by the violence.

Global Reactions and Broader Context

In Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the attack as cold-blooded, linking it to rising anti-Semitic sentiments worldwide. He criticized what he sees as growing political tolerance of anti-Israel rhetoric and stated that such events reinforce his view of the need for strong international solidarity against terrorism.

Meanwhile, European and Nordic governments are increasingly concerned about threats to Jewish communities in light of tensions in the Middle East. Danish authorities have been in close contact with partners abroad to ensure coordinated exchange of intelligence and threat assessments.

Public Safety and Preparedness

Despite the tragic event in Sydney, Danish police stress that people should continue their daily activities, while remaining alert during large gatherings and public celebrations. Municipalities have also updated their own internal security procedures for holiday events to avoid any disruptions or risks.

Strong cooperation between national and local agencies is expected to continue. PET noted that awareness and prevention remain the most important tools, alongside the help of the Danish public, who are encouraged to report suspicious behaviors.

Given that Denmark has already dealt with incidents ranging from cyberattacks to threats against cultural events, vigilance has become a normal part of everyday security planning. The increased presence of police and collaboration with private security providers reflect broader strategies similar to those recommended in international guides on security services in Denmark.

For now, Denmark’s threat level stands firm, and visible security measures will continue through the holiday season to ensure safety in public spaces.
