Pesticide factory blocked by 200 activists in Jutland

Hundreds of activists blocked heavy transport at the FMC Rønland pesticide factory, formerly Cheminova, at Harboøre in western Jutland on August 13, 2026. A group of activists also entered the factory grounds.

The Danish newspaper Arbejderen reports that the plant received a new visit from demonstrators, who blocked transport in and out of the site. The action formed part of the protest campaign known as Bryd Kæden, or Break The Chain.

DR reported that around 200 activists gathered on Harboøre Tange and blocked trucks, while some forced their way onto the factory grounds. According to DR, the participants came from the Danish Green Youth Movement and other Nordic organizations.

Dimethoate exports at the center of the protest

Per DR, the demonstration targeted the factory’s production of the pesticide dimethoate. The substance is exported outside the EU, even though its use is illegal in Denmark and the rest of the EU.

The activists called for a national ban on exports of EU-illegal pesticides, DR noted. They also demanded a plan for a secure job transition for employees if the factory were to close. As stated by DR, the road between Thyborøn and Harboøre was blocked as a result of the action.

Wire coverage distributed through Via Ritzau described hundreds of activists blocking heavy transport in and out of the pesticide factory, with some entering the site. The same coverage said it was the second time that week that activists had been at the plant.

According to press material from the Danish Green Youth Movement distributed by Ritzau, about 500 activists from Denmark and other European countries had gathered in Denmark for the Bryd Kæden action series. The group said police were present at the factory and that some workers were sent home. Figures on the number of participants differ between outlets, and no verified headcount has been published.

Part of a two-week action period

Arbejderen previously reported that around 40 to 50 activists were at the factory on August 10, 2026, at the start of a two-week action period. The August 13 blockade therefore came as part of a planned sequence of protests rather than a single event.

The same reporting noted that the area around the factory has been contaminated for decades, including the Høfde 42 site on Harboøre Tange. Activists linked their protest to that pollution and to their demand to stop exports of pesticides that are banned inside the EU.
