Mayor Scandal Threatens Power Shift in Hjørring

In Hjørring Municipality, Denmark’s Social Democrats are calling for a delay in the formal appointment of the mayor after raising legal concerns about current mayor Søren Smalbro’s handling of confidential information.

Social Democrats Question Mayor’s Position

Tension is rising in Hjørring Municipality as the local Social Democrats want to postpone the official formation of the city council. They argue that the process should wait until a legal review is completed regarding a possible breach of confidentiality by Mayor Søren Smalbro from the Liberal Party (Venstre).

Smabro, who has served as mayor for the past four years, was set to continue in the role after the recent local election. However, Social Democratic representatives now suggest that the confirmation should not take place until next week, when they expect the legal review to be finalized.

According to their mayoral candidate, Mai-Britt Beith, the investigation focuses on whether Smalbro violated his duty of confidentiality during a televised voter debate when he allegedly mentioned the cause of death of a nursing home resident. Beith says it would be inappropriate to confirm a mayor under such uncertainty.

Request for Delay Faces Resistance

The Social Democrats hold nine of the thirty-one seats in Hjørring’s city council. At this point, it is uncertain whether other parties will support their proposal to delay the mayoral appointment.

Beith stated that the issue is not about political rivalry but about maintaining trust in the local government’s leadership. However, she also noted that she has not yet spoken with all members of the council ahead of the meeting.

Her last-minute push casts doubt on a process that was expected to confirm Smalbro without controversy. The party had already lost its bid for the mayoral seat in the election, but by raising this legal concern, it introduces new questions about transparency and accountability in the municipality’s political leadership.

Conservatives Stand by Smalbro

Hjørring’s Conservatives have rejected the idea of delaying the decision. Their leader, Per Møller, said his party stands by the agreement that supports Smalbro as mayor. They consider the matter serious but believe breaking their coalition deal would go too far.

Even so, Møller acknowledged that the issue deserves investigation and suggested that, if necessary, the matter could be referred to municipal oversight authorities for review.

Smabro continues to have backing from the Conservatives, the Danish People’s Party, the Denmark Democrats, and the Socialist People’s Party. Together, these groups hold a majority, meaning that unless members change their stance, he is likely to remain in office.

Legal and Political Implications

The case in Hjørring highlights a broader debate in Danish local politics about accountability and ethical standards among mayors and council members. It also reflects the fragile balance of power that often follows Denmark’s local elections, where even small controversies can shift alliances or delay formal decisions.

If the investigation confirms that confidential information was disclosed, it could set a precedent for how municipalities handle similar breaches in the future. It might also lead to renewed discussions about the legal limits of political communication in local campaigns that are broadcast publicly.

For now, Smalbro has chosen not to comment on the situation. His allies believe the review will clear him of wrongdoing, while opponents insist that further scrutiny is needed before Hjørring moves forward with its new city council formation.

Uncertain Outcome Ahead

The final decision on delaying the confirmation is expected soon. Even though most parties continue to support Smalbro, the situation reveals a clear divide in the council’s approach to governance ethics.

Without a doubt, the question of whether a mayor can continue in office while under legal review puts both political integrity and public trust to the test. If the Social Democrats succeed in pausing the process, it could redefine how similar disputes are handled in other Danish municipalities.
