Wolf debate song links loneliness to Danish division

The Esbjerg band Solplet has written a song about loneliness and division inspired by Denmark’s wolf debate. On Wednesday, the group performed at the spot near Nørre Nebel where a suspected problem wolf was shot.

DR reports that the band Solplet has released the song “Vi hyler for livet”. The song takes its starting point in the polarized Danish debate about wolves. Lead singer Gustav Hendriksen says the band hopes it can bring people together.

The opening lines state that it is not the wolf that kills humans. The lyrics instead point to oil, drones, rockets, heatwaves and state budgets. Hendriksen told DR he finds it regrettable that Danes are divided over one wolf and over fear.

According to Hendriksen, the song was also written with a strong focus on loneliness. He believes that feeling can grow out of divisive debates such as the one about wolves. He stresses that the song is not meant to shame anyone.

Hendriksen, who lives in Esbjerg, acknowledges that he does not encounter wolves in his daily life. Residents around Nørre Nebel have a different everyday experience, he notes. He says the aim is to move the focus toward what he sees as real dangers to people.

As stated by Hendriksen to DR, no wolf has killed a human in Europe in the past 50 years. He argues that the climate crisis, war and loneliness have had lethal consequences in the same period. Loneliness, in his assessment, shortens many people’s lives.

Live session at the shooting site

The live session took place Wednesday afternoon at Blåbjerg Plantage near Nørre Nebel in West Jutland. It was held at the location where the suspected problem wolf was shot. A wolf soft toy was part of the performance, according to DR.

Hendriksen describes the session partly as a parody of the press conference held shortly after the wolf was shot. DR reported earlier in 2026 that the suspected problem wolf in West Jutland had been shot near Nørre Nebel. That killing, and the press conference that followed, form the direct backdrop for the band’s performance.

At the time of DR’s report, no other national outlet had covered the song or the live session at Blåbjerg Plantage. The wolf debate itself has been running in Danish media alongside the case of the animal shot in West Jutland. Solplet’s contribution is framed by the band as an artistic response to that discussion.
