St Albans Church: The Only Anglican Church in Denmark

Copenhagen’s Churchill Park is where you will find the Anglican church called St Albans Church. Dubbed “the English Church,” it emerged as an answer to the spiritual calls of the English community residing in Denmark during the 19th century. Officially inaugurated on September 17, 1887, by the Princess of Wales—who later became Queen Alexandra—it rapidly became a pivotal site for English expatriates and visitors alike. In addition, the church is named after St. Alban, considered the first Christian martyr in England. Thus, echoing a deep-rooted connection to its Anglican origins.

I had read about St. Alban before arriving at this place, but not comprehensively. Nonetheless, there was much more to learn from my tour guide. Another cathedral in Denmark (which I visited recently) named after a saint from another country is St. Olaf’s Church.

Architecture and More

Designed by leading Victorian architect Arthur Blomfield, the church showcases an enchanting blend of architectural artistry. What’s more, its magnificent Gothic style, characterized by pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and delicate stonework, elevates the craftsmanship to a level that rivals the finest religious buildings in England.

St. Alban’s was a project born out of not only religious passion but also political goodwill. Its erection was made possible through generous contributions from the British government and prominent Anglophiles in Denmark. Therefore, emphasizing the ties between the two nations. Notably, the church sprung to life with the outreach of Sir George Gilbert Scott, who was influential in building a British presence through religious architecture.
