The Royal Family

This is where you’ll find stories about Denmark’s monarchy: its history, public role, and the lives of the royals in today’s Denmark.

Category: The Royal Family

The Danish Royal Family is one of the oldest and most respected monarchies in the world, with a continuous royal lineage stretching back over a thousand years to the Viking Age kings of Denmark. The Danish monarchy is a constitutional monarchy, meaning the monarch fulfils a ceremonial, symbolic, and diplomatic role within a fully democratic political system, without executive political power.

Despite this formal limitation, the Danish Royal Family commands extraordinary public affection and loyalty in Denmark, with surveys consistently showing that the vast majority of Danes support the continuation of the monarchy as an institution and the Royal Family as its representatives. Queen Margrethe II, who reigned from 1972 until her abdication in January 2024, became one of the most beloved and culturally significant figures in modern Danish history. An accomplished artist, author, and translator in her own right, she embodied a vision of the Danish monarchy as intellectually engaged, culturally active, and deeply connected to the lives of ordinary Danes.

Her abdication in favour of her son, who became King Frederik X, marked a historic transition that generated enormous interest both within Denmark and internationally. King Frederik X and Queen Mary, the Australian-born Crown Princess who won Danish hearts with her warmth, elegance, and genuine commitment to Danish society, began their reign to widespread public enthusiasm.

The Royal Palace of Amalienborg in the heart of Copenhagen, with its daily changing of the guard ceremony, is one of Denmark’s most visited landmarks. Fredensborg Palace, the royal family’s spring and autumn residence, and Marselisborg Palace in Aarhus are other important royal residences that connect the family to different parts of the country.

Understanding the Danish Royal Family, their history, their modern role, and the cultural significance they hold in Danish national identity, is an essential part of understanding Denmark itself.
