New invasive mosquito species capable of carrying dengue and other tropical diseases are spreading north through Europe, and entomologists have documented the Asian tiger mosquito overwintering in northern Germany, only a few hundred kilometres south of the Danish border.
For years, Denmark’s mosquito problem meant itchy summer evenings by the lake. Now it may mean disease risk that many internationals know from home. The Asian tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus, is not just an aggressive biter. It is a proven vector of dengue, chikungunya and Zika, viruses that have already caused local outbreaks in France, Italy and Spain over the past decade. The cemetery mosquito, Culex modestus, is a nuisance species and a suspected bridge vector for West Nile virus, but is not associated with dengue, chikungunya or Zika.
Since 2023, stable tiger mosquito populations have been documented overwintering in northern Germany, a few hundred kilometres south of the Danish border. These mosquitoes survive winter and re-emerge, a critical threshold marking the shift from occasional visitor to permanent resident. Two decades ago, stable populations were mostly confined to northern Italy and southern France. Over the past 10 to 15 years they have expanded into central and northern Europe, including Germany.
From nuisance to public health problem
Germany offers a preview of what Denmark may face. According to ECDC and national surveillance data, Germany has recently reported its first locally acquired dengue cases, after having no local transmission in previous years. According to ECDC historical autochthonous dengue transmission data, France experienced multiple local dengue outbreaks in 2022, with several clusters totalling dozens of cases, whereas a decade earlier local transmission was only sporadically reported.
Across the EU and EEA, the Asian tiger mosquito is now established in at least 14 countries, up from fewer than ten around 2018, according to ECDC vector distribution maps published in May 2024. Modelling studies cited by ECDC and the EU Joint Research Centre indicate that by around 2030, summer climate in parts of southern Scandinavia, including Denmark, will be suitable for Aedes albopictus, similar to present-day conditions in parts of northern Germany where the mosquito is already established.
Why expats should pay attention
Internationals in Denmark face a double exposure. Many travel regularly to and from endemic countries, potentially importing viruses that local mosquitoes could transmit, a mechanism described by ECDC in its mosquito-borne disease surveillance reports. Many expats also live in dense urban neighbourhoods of Copenhagen, where container gardens, rain barrels and balconies create ideal breeding sites for these mosquitoes.
According to Statistics Denmark, residents with non-Danish citizenship account for over 15 percent of Copenhagen municipality’s population, up from about 11 percent in 2018. That concentration in urban districts means expat communities could be early adopters of preventive measures, or early to face risk if authorities fail to communicate in English.
No coordinated response yet
Denmark does not currently have a dedicated national programme targeting invasive mosquitoes. Surveillance and response involve municipalities, the Danish Environmental Protection Agency and Statens Serum Institut, and much of the monitoring is carried out through research projects. Public health messaging has largely focused on ticks and traditional nuisance mosquitoes, and little information on invasive species is available in English.
German monitoring programmes, cited by ECDC, have documented Aedes albopictus breeding sites along major north-south transport corridors, with road traffic confirmed as a key route for the species’ spread. Germany’s experience suggests that once systematic monitoring begins, authorities find more mosquitoes than expected, often in private gardens and rainwater tanks.
What you can do now
The preventive steps are simple but require awareness. Empty flowerpot saucers, buckets, old tires and any container that can hold even a few centimetres of water. Fit rain barrels with tight lids or mosquito mesh. Check balcony planters after heavy rain. Use DEET or picaridin based repellents, especially if you have recently returned from tropical travel.
For expats, it is worth checking whether your health insurance covers mosquito-borne illnesses. If you develop fever after travel to endemic regions, mention dengue or chikungunya to your Danish doctor. Many clinicians here are less accustomed to seeing such cases, but prompt diagnosis matters.
Climate security, not just tourism
Recent WHO Europe and EU policy analyses link mosquito-borne diseases in temperate Europe to climate change, heatwaves, flooding and land-use change, framing them as part of broader climate-related health risks. This framing may shape how Danish authorities respond, potentially integrating mosquito surveillance into broader climate adaptation plans.
In recent years, southern France has repeatedly experienced small local dengue outbreaks during summer, prompting emergency vector-control campaigns and targeted health alerts in affected towns. According to ECDC transmission data, even without year-round endemic transmission, short summer windows can be enough for imported cases combined with invasive mosquitoes to produce local clusters. Modelling studies suggest Denmark may soon have similar summer conditions, increasing the potential for such clusters if the Asian tiger mosquito becomes established here.
