King Frederik inaugurates first royal flag in Herning

King Frederik X inaugurated a new flag for Beredskabsstyrelsen Midtjylland at a ceremony in Herning on September 15, 2026. It was the first time the Central Jutland civil defense center received a royally inaugurated flag.

The ceremony took place at the civil defense center in Herning, where staff and volunteers stood in formation. DR reports that the King hammered ceremonial nails into the flag as part of the inauguration.

According to DR, the three nails carry a fixed meaning in the Danish ritual. One is for the King, one for the fatherland, and one for Beredskabsstyrelsen Midtjylland. The Royal House, Kongehuset, states that the King hammered the first nail and then handed over the flag.

A central rallying symbol

Beredskabsstyrelsen operates six centers across Denmark, and the flag serves as each unit’s central rallying mark. As reported by DR, it is regarded as a symbol of tradition, community, and service.

Royally inaugurated flags have been a tradition at Danish barracks for many years. Per DR, the Royal House decided in 2023 that Denmark’s civil defense units should also receive royally inaugurated flags. The event in Herning marked the first such inauguration for the Central Jutland center.

Volunteers and residents attended

Local residents from Herning turned up to watch the parade alongside personnel from the center. Karoline Houlberg Pedersen, who attended the ceremony, told DR that it was enjoyable to take part in and an important thing to support.

Jacob Brandt Clausen, a volunteer sergeant with Beredskabsstyrelsen, was on duty at the ceremony. He described the day to DR as historic, and said the flag reflects the unit’s cohesion and sense of community.

Tommy Lind Krogh, also a volunteer with the agency, watched the ceremony as a spectator. He said the flag is not only an agency flag, and described it as part of himself, adding that everyone values it highly.

Beredskabsstyrelsen is Denmark’s state emergency management agency, which supports municipal fire services and handles large or prolonged incidents. Its Central Jutland center is based in Herning and staffed by conscripts, permanent personnel, and volunteers.

The King’s visit was the main public event of the day at the center, according to DR. The broadcaster noted that the inauguration drew both agency members and local spectators to the site in Herning.
