Radiohead Cancels Sold-Out Shows, Fans Devastated

Thousands of fans were left disappointed in Copenhagen after Radiohead canceled two sold-out shows at Royal Arena just hours before the first concert due to illness. The performances have been rescheduled for mid-December.

Unexpected Cancellation Hits Fans Hard

Fans from across Denmark and abroad were ready outside Royal Arena in Copenhagen when the news broke that Radiohead’s first two concerts in the city were canceled. The announcement came only a few hours before showtime, leaving many with long trips, hotel bookings, and no concert to attend.

The cancellations were caused by lead singer Thom Yorke falling ill with a throat infection. Radiohead was scheduled to perform four concerts in Copenhagen this week as part of its first European tour in seven years. The band confirmed that both the Monday and Tuesday shows would be postponed.

A father and son from Hjørring had traveled all the way from northern Jutland for what was supposed to be the son’s birthday present: an evening with one of his favorite bands. Instead, they found themselves outside the arena trying to salvage the night after taking two days off work and booking a hotel.

The pair joined thousands of others who had hoped to sing along to Radiohead classics. Some fans, trying to make the best of the situation, still visited the merchandise stand near the arena, which opened around the same time the disappointing news was announced.

European Fans Also Affected

One particularly unlucky fan had flown from the Netherlands to see the British band play not one but two nights in Copenhagen. He had arrived early in the morning, waiting in the cold for hours before reading the cancellation post online. Although frustrated, he said he understood the decision since health comes first.

He had also purchased a ticket for the second canceled show, but flights home prevented him from attending the rescheduled dates in December. Like many others, he now faces the choice of either returning to Denmark or requesting a refund.

Radiohead’s management stated that all tickets for the postponed concerts on December 15 and 16 will remain valid. Ticket holders who cannot attend the new dates are entitled to full refunds.

Massive Demand for the Royal Arena Shows

This Nordic leg of Radiohead’s tour marks the band’s first live performances in Denmark since appearing at NorthSide Festival in Aarhus in 2017, an event often mentioned alongside the best music festivals in Copenhagen. Since then, fans had waited years for the group’s return.

Unsurprisingly, the excitement was intense when tickets went on sale. According to organizers, all 65,000 tickets for the band’s four Royal Arena concerts sold out in just 25 minutes.

A Look Back at the Band’s Tour

Rather than introducing new songs, the band’s current European tour features highlights from its extensive catalog. Radiohead has already played to audiences in Madrid, Bologna, and London, performing favorites from across their career.

Fans still hoping to see them at the remaining scheduled concerts in early December should be in luck. The band has expressed hope that Thom Yorke will recover in time for those shows and later performances in Berlin.

For many attendees, Copenhagen’s concert experience is about more than the music. The city has become a live performance hub, with events easy to track through local listings and tools such as the best event apps in Denmark for foreigners. Yet, sudden cancellations like this one highlight the unpredictability of live entertainment, even for world-renowned acts.

Despite the disappointment, most fans expressed sympathy rather than anger. Many said they looked forward to returning when Radiohead’s tour resumes in December, hoping that this time, the show will indeed go on.
