OpenAI’s latest report reveals the most common questions users ask ChatGPT, highlighting a growing trend in personal and non-work-related use of artificial intelligence.
Practical Guidance Tops User Interests
According to OpenAI’s first comprehensive study on user behavior, the most frequent reason people turn to the AI chatbot ChatGPT is for practical guidance. This type of use accounts for nearly one-third, specifically 28.8% of all queries. These inquiries often include health advice, self-care strategies, workout tips, and homework assistance.
OpenAI compiled the findings using data from 1.5 million ChatGPT users between May 2024 and June 2025. The report categorizes user interactions into seven major areas to better understand how people are actually engaging with the platform.
Searching for More Than Just Answers
The second most common category, representing 24.4% of queries, is information seeking. Much like a search engine, users leverage ChatGPT to find facts, look up recipes, or locate products they intend to buy. This shows that ChatGPT is increasingly serving as an alternative to traditional search engines.
A close third is writing support. About 23.9% of users use the chatbot for help with writing, editing, or translating content. These requests range from drafting social media posts to summarizing articles or polishing professional emails.
The Rise of Personal Use
The study reveals a striking shift in how ChatGPT is used over time. In June 2024, 451 million messages were exchanged through the service daily. Just a year later, the number of daily messages increased nearly sixfold to over 2.6 billion.
More importantly, the nature of the conversations has changed. In June 2024, only 53% of the messages were non-work-related. By June 2025, that figure had jumped to 73%. This suggests that users are increasingly turning to ChatGPT not just for work or school tasks but also for personal support and casual interaction.
Other Notable Uses
Beyond the top three categories, the report notes that:
– 7.3% of the queries focused on multimedia, such as creating or editing images and other digital content.
– 5.3% involved self-expression, including casual conversation, role-playing, or personal advice.
– 5.2% fell into miscellaneous categories not covered by the main themes.
– 5.1% involved technical assistance, such as solving math problems or analyzing data.
Human Connection in a Digital Age
The increasing reliance on ChatGPT for personal queries reflects a broader societal trend toward exploring artificial intelligence as a tool for self-understanding, emotional support, and human connection. This aligns with the idea that authenticity and emotional experience are new cultural values in digital life.
In Danish society, this shift is mirrored in consumption habits, with people opting for handmade sweaters from Iceland over mass-produced goods. Similarly, the way Danes are using ChatGPT underscores an interest in tools that enhance, rather than replace, their human experience.
Artificial Intelligence Becoming More Integrated
The transformation in ChatGPT use is part of a broader adoption of artificial intelligence across Denmark. From supplementing student learning to offering mental health advice, Danes are finding new, more meaningful ways to interact with AI technologies.
Although OpenAI’s study has not yet undergone peer review, industry experts say the findings are consistent with earlier analytics on chatbot behavior. The growing demand for AI-generated insights in a personal context marks a significant cultural shift.
The Future of AI in Everyday Life
The report underlines that artificial intelligence is no longer just a workplace tool or novelty. Instead, it is becoming deeply embedded in how individuals manage their lives, emotions, and relationships.
In Denmark, as in much of the world, AI tools like ChatGPT are being integrated into daily routines—not just for efficiency, but for enrichment. And with usage numbers climbing, the role of AI in shaping modern life is only expected to grow.
