Watch 400 Drones in Denmark Light the Sky in Celebration

Despite recent security concerns over drones in Denmark, Fårup Sommerland is moving forward with a spectacular 400-drone light show marking its 50th anniversary.

A Festive Contrast Amid Tense Drone Debates

As Denmark finds itself amid heightened concerns over suspicious drone activity near airports and military facilities, one amusement park in Northern Jutland is lighting up the skies for an entirely different reason. Fårup Sommerland, one of Denmark’s most beloved family destinations, is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a dazzling show featuring a fleet of 400 synchronized drones in Denmark. It’s a peaceful use of drone technology.

While civil drone flights were temporarily banned last week during a high-level EU summit in Copenhagen, organizers at Fårup Sommerland have carefully coordinated with local authorities to ensure their show complies with all safety regulations. The timing of the display is not lost on the park’s leadership, who acknowledge the sensitive nature of using drones in Denmark, the current climate but emphasize the peaceful and artistic intent of the project. All plans were cleared with local officials.

A Year in the Making

This high-tech performance has been in development for nearly a year and is being executed in partnership with internationally renowned drone entertainment company Dronisos. Based in France, Dronisos has designed aerial light shows around the world, including for major entertainment hubs such as Disneyland Paris.

The celebratory display has its general rehearsal this week and is planned to premiere publicly on Friday evening. It will run every night at 9:30 p.m. during the Danish fall school holiday, offering guests a brilliant nighttime experience unlike anything the country has seen before.

Denmark’s Largest Drone Show

With 400 drones in Denmark, choreographed to move in patterns above the park, this will be the largest drone-based light show ever conducted in Denmark. The drones will perform over a designated 100 by 100-meter safety zone above the park’s water attraction area, known as “Orkanøen” (Hurricane Island). The area has been specially prepared with strict protocols to maintain safety for guests and staff alike.

All drones are pre-programmed and automatically operated to ensure strict adherence to flight paths and distances. The choice to position the display above this confined area was made specifically to minimize any risk or disruption. Show organizers have taken every precaution to work within safety regulations and public airspace controls.

Public Communication and Transparency

To ease public concerns and reduce confusion due to recent media headlines about illegal drone usage, the park has proactively communicated its intentions and plans online. Notices on its website and social media pages clearly state that the show complies with Danish aviation regulations and will only proceed if no new restrictions arise.

The park has stressed that it is fully prepared to cancel the show if security concerns require it, but hopes that their transparent planning and official permissions will allow the performances to proceed as scheduled.

High Expectations from Guests

Fårup Sommerland attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors annually, with its roller coasters, water rides, and nature-based attractions ranking it among Denmark’s top amusement parks. In 2023 alone, the park welcomed over 600,000 guests. The drone show is expected to be a major evening draw during the fall break, adding an exciting and futuristic flair to the park’s traditional lineup of activities.

With anticipation building, organizers are hoping for a seamless rollout and enthusiastic guest response. The drone show is designed to be a visual storytelling experience, accompanied by music and lighting to create an immersive spectacle that appeals to both children and adults.

A Celebratory Sky for All Ages

As Denmark cautiously navigates a period of geopolitical tension and technological concern, Fårup Sommerland is offering a glimpse at how drones in Denmark can also be tools of wonder and joy. With safety as their top priority and a full year of planning behind them, the park is poised to celebrate its milestone anniversary in high-flying style – quite literally.

Guests can view the drone spectacle starting Friday evening, with performances planned each night through the school holiday week. If all goes according to plan, this will go down as one of the most visually stunning celebrations in the park’s history, underlining how innovation and diligence can create magic, even in uncertain times.
