Street Soccer Empowers Homeless in Aarhus Event

In Aarhus, Denmark, local businesses and community members will come together this September to support homeless and vulnerable citizens through street soccer tournaments that promote inclusion and empowerment.

Street Soccer Highlights Social Change in Aarhus

On September 10 and 11, 2025, the city of Aarhus will host two soccer events aimed at supporting socially marginalized groups as people experiencing homelessness, addiction, or mental health challenges. Organized by the nonprofit OMBOLD in collaboration with the Danish football club AGF, the events use street soccer as a unique tool to foster social inclusion and create new opportunities for those in vulnerable life situations.

Local Businesses Take the Field for a Cause

The first event, the OMBOLD x AGF Sponsor Cup, will take place on Wednesday, September 10 from 2:00 PM to 6:30 PM in the parking lot next to VSK in Vejlby. This marks the tournament’s second year in Aarhus.

Participants in the sponsor cup include local companies, organizations, and associations. These teams not only contribute sponsorship funds but also field their own players, highlighting a hands-on commitment to community impact. The net proceeds support regular local soccer training sessions and grassroots tournaments for the target group, adults who typically do not have access to traditional sports clubs due to socioeconomic factors.

One of the highlights of the Sponsor Cup is the participation of a team comprising legendary AGF players, including former professional athletes like Martin Jørgensen, Flemming Povlsen, and Henrik Mortensen.

Aarhus Championships Celebrate Social Inclusion

The following day, Thursday, September 11, the De Åbne Aarhusmesterskaberne (Open Aarhus Championships) will bring together players from across Denmark to compete in a festive street soccer tournament. Taking place from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM at the same VSK location, the event is a powerful expression of community and solidarity for individuals in unstable living conditions.

The street soccer pitches are specially designed to cater to both veteran players and first-time participants. Beyond competing, many participants take on volunteer roles, as referees, scoreboard operators, and setup crew, allowing them to contribute meaningfully to the event’s success. For many, this annual championship is a peak moment and a key motivator for staying engaged in weekly training sessions.

Soccer as a Platform for Empowerment

OMBOLD, the NGO behind the initiative, has been using soccer as a vehicle for social empowerment since 2003. Their mission is to provide a sense of belonging and recognition through sports for adults living on the margins of society. Since its founding, OMBOLD has engaged over 20,000 people nationwide.

With over 2,500 participants annually, the organization creates community through open training events and national tournaments like the AsfaltLigaen (Asphalt League). Participants often report improved physical and mental well-being, reduced substance use, and a decrease in feelings of isolation after joining these soccer communities.

Research and field experience show that involvement in sports can drive broader life changes. For many participants, these tournaments spark newfound confidence and become stepping stones toward further education, employment, or stabilization.

Political and Community Engagement

The tournaments are not just recreational, they serve as public platforms to raise awareness of critical social issues like homelessness, addiction, and mental health. They also attract attention from political stakeholders, fostering discussions about how sports can play a role in public welfare strategies.

The local collaboration between AGF and OMBOLD illustrates how professional sports clubs can leverage their influence to drive change at the grassroots level. AGF has used its partnerships and public visibility to rally support for social causes, aligning with OMBOLD’s vision that everyone belongs on the field, regardless of their background.
