On Sunday, September 21, 2025, Danish farms and food companies will celebrate the 30th anniversary of “Open Farm Day,” inviting the public to explore life in the countryside and learn more about sustainable food production in Denmark. Participation is free and will involve 57 farms and companies across the country.
Experience the Danish Countryside Firsthand
Families and curious visitors will have the chance to step deep into the world of modern Danish agriculture this fall as the nationally celebrated Open Farm Day (Åbent Landbrug) marks its 30th anniversary. Hosted annually by the association Landbrug & Fødevarer (Agriculture & Food), the event encourages Danes of all ages to discover where their food comes from through immersive, farm-based experiences across the country. Families can learn about Danish farms and enjoy time in the countryside.
Since 1995, Danish farmers and food producers have opened their barn doors and factory gates to the public. The initiative was started as a way to bridge the gap between urban consumers and the rural world, offering transparency in food production and providing educational opportunities for families. It gives people a chance to visit Danish farms and learn about food production.
Open Farm Day 2025 is scheduled for Sunday, September 21 and will showcase animal husbandry, crop production, and the technology driving modern agriculture. From petting calves and climbing onto tractors to learning how local foods are made, visitors are invited to get their hands dirty—quite literally.
Nationwide Participation from Local Farms
This year, 57 participating farms and agricultural businesses are expected to take part, inviting urban and suburban families to meet farmers, explore their land, and ask questions about their practices. Visitors can expect an authentic look at animals such as cows, pigs, sheep, and chickens, as well as an introduction to crops growing in the fields and fruit on the trees.
The event is designed to be both educational and fun. Children can play in hay bales, watch milking demonstrations, and take part in interactive games. Adults can take guided tours, explore sustainability initiatives, and learn how Denmark’s agricultural sector is adapting to environmental and technological changes.
Spotlight on New Local Green Partnerships
In a new element introduced this year, Open Farm Day will also include presentations and discussions on “local green tripartite councils” — a new initiative rooted in Denmark’s climate transition strategy. These regional partnerships bring together farmers, municipalities, and environmental organizations to align on green goals, particularly at the local level.
This addition aims to show how communities are directly involved in implementing Denmark’s nationwide green deal (Grøn Aftale), and to engage the public in ongoing conversations about sustainable land use, climate adaptation, and biodiversity.
Building Trust Through Openness and Dialogue
By allowing people to see food production with their own eyes, Open Farm Day seeks to build trust between producers and consumers. In Denmark, where public interest in sustainable living and ethical food sourcing continues to grow, events like these strengthen the understanding of how food systems operate, underscoring the balance between modern agriculture and environmental responsibility.
In 2024 alone, more than 80,000 people attended Open Farm Day, and organizers expect a similar turnout this year. The event not only boosts farm visibility but also reinforces Denmark’s reputation as a leader in sustainable and transparent food production.
Free Entry and Family-Friendly Atmosphere
Admission to all locations is free, and most sites offer additional activities like food tasting, local produce markets, and informational booths. While pre-booking is recommended for certain Danish farms due to expected high interest, walk-ins are generally welcome.
Visitors can find more information about participating locations and book their visits online by browsing the official website aabentlandbrug.dk.
With fresh air, muddy boots, animals to meet, and conversations to join, Open Farm Day 2025 promises a memorable rural getaway—and a meaningful dialogue about Denmark’s agricultural future. Whether you’re curious about how your pork is produced or how farms are planting trees to offset carbon, this event offers a clear window into Denmark’s countryside and its commitments to sustainability.
