During Denmark’s fall school break, families are invited to experience real Danish Viking combat and engage in military-style fitness challenges at the War Museum in Copenhagen.
Live Viking Battles and Family Activities Take Center Stage
This fall break, from October 14 to 18, the War Museum in central Copenhagen will be transformed into an arena for Danish Viking combat demonstrations and family-friendly military fitness activities. The popular attraction will host the Viking reenactment group Ulfhednir, who will bring history to life with dramatic battle shows staged four times each day.
Accompanied by rhythmic drumming and the clash of shields and swords, the Viking warriors demonstrate historically accurate fight scenes, showcasing how Norse warriors trained and fought over 1,000 years ago. Each battle session ends with a meet-and-greet opportunity, where visitors can speak with the performers, explore their traditional weaponry, and learn about Viking combat techniques.
Activate Your Inner Soldier in “Fit for Fight”
Beyond the battlefield excitement, the museum invites families to test their strength and teamwork in the interactive program “Fit for Fight.” This military-inspired fitness initiative runs every weekday during the school break from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Aimed at children and their parents, the activity zone offers physical challenges drawn from modern military training. Participants can challenge each other in stamina-based tasks – including push-up competitions and plank endurance tests – designed to make fitness fun and collaborative.
But it’s not just about muscles. “Fit for Fight” integrates strategic thinking and group cooperation. In one team-oriented challenge, families work together to build a field stretcher. In another, they embark on a timed “patrol mission,” carrying a packed rucksack as though on military duty. These engaging games highlight the importance of both physical readiness and team spirit in combat environments.
Scheduling and Admission
The Danish Viking combat shows with Ulfhednir take place Monday through Friday, beginning at 11:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., 1:00 p.m., and 2:00 p.m. Each session lasts approximately 30 minutes and is included with the general museum entrance fee. Tickets cost 105 DKK (approximately $15 USD) for adults and 55 DKK (around $8 USD) for children. As part of the admission, visitors also gain access to the museum’s extensive exhibitions on warfare and Danish military history.
The War Museum: A Hub of History and Hands-On Learning
Located in the historic former royal arsenal, the War Museum offers deep insights into Denmark’s military past. Its exhibits include detailed models of royal Danish navy warships, notable artifacts from 21 armed conflicts involving Denmark over the past five centuries, and immersive displays that take visitors from 17th-century Europe to recent missions in Afghanistan.
On average, the museum welcomes over 100,000 visitors annually, many of whom are drawn by its hands-on approach to learning and rich historical storytelling.
More Than Just a Museum Visit
Through events like the Danish Viking reenactments and Fit for Fight, the War Museum provides a dynamic, educational outing for families seeking an alternative to conventional fall break activities. The museum’s mission is to connect past and present by merging historical insight with physical engagement – a tradition that continues to gain popularity among Danes and international tourists alike.
With Viking history embedded deeply in Danish culture, this fall’s program offers a rare opportunity for children and adults to not only observe—but also experience – the warrior’s life during one of history’s most iconic eras.
