Convicted Killer Escapes High-Security Copenhagen Prison

A convicted murderer serving an indefinite preventive detention sentence escaped from Vestre Prison in Copenhagen during the night of Wednesday. Philip Denié Dahl Petersen, who was sentenced to preventive detention in February 2024 for murder, managed to climb over the outer wall after reaching the prison yard. Police are warning the public that he is dangerous and should not be approached.

Escape Details and Police Response

Copenhagen Police received notification of the escape shortly after midnight. The 35-year-old inmate managed to navigate his way through the facility before ultimately scaling the outer wall to freedom.

Kenneth Hviid Simonsen, central investigation leader at Copenhagen Police, confirmed that authorities have a clear understanding of the escape route within the facility. However, specific details are being withheld for investigative purposes. What officials can confirm is that Petersen eventually reached the prison yard, from where he climbed over the external wall.

Authorities are conducting a broad search and have no indication that he fled toward any specific area of the country. Anyone who sees Petersen should immediately contact emergency services by calling 112. Those with information about his possible whereabouts should call 114.

The Murder Conviction

Philip Denié Dahl Petersen received an indefinite preventive detention sentence in February 2024 for murder. The crime occurred on June 8, 2022, during a violent confrontation outside a bar in Sydhavnen, a district of Copenhagen.

The 31-year-old victim was fatally stabbed with a kitchen knife. Petersen was also convicted of attempted murder of a then 37-year-old man in connection with the same incident.

Although some media outlets previously reported that the murder victim had ties to Hells Angels, police dismissed any connection to the rocker or gang environment. The case was treated as an isolated violent incident rather than organized crime activity.

Understanding Preventive Detention

Preventive detention is a measure Danish courts can impose instead of a fixed prison sentence. It is applied for an indefinite period when the court determines that the convicted person poses a continuing danger to society.

For such a sentence to be imposed, the court must assess that preventive detention is necessary to prevent the individual from committing further crimes. This type of sentence is typically reserved for the most serious offenders who are deemed likely to reoffend.

Security Concerns at Vestre Prison

The escape from Vestre Prison raises fresh questions about security measures at the facility. This is not the first time an inmate has managed to escape from the institution. In 2021, another prisoner evaded custody during release procedures, prompting an official review that involved interviews with 10 staff members.

Vestre Prison houses Denmark’s largest concentration of inmates with gang-related backgrounds. As a result, the facility has been implementing ongoing security enhancements to address the unique challenges posed by this population.

Despite these efforts, the prison operates under significant constraints. The facility was designed to hold 595 inmates but regularly exceeds capacity, averaging 622 occupants with peaks going even higher. Currently, 23 cells are being used for double occupancy, and visitation rooms have been converted into cells to accommodate the overflow.

Infrastructure and Operational Challenges

The overcrowding problem is compounded by chronic staffing shortages. Vestre Prison faces deficits of 30 to 40 officers, resulting in 6,000 to 7,000 unfilled working hours each month. This forces the facility to deploy trainees and require mandatory overtime from existing staff.

Historical inspections have revealed vulnerabilities in the aging infrastructure. An inspection conducted between 2004 and 2005 highlighted issues including outdated windows, unblinded peepholes, and concerns about visitation room security. While some of these issues have since been addressed, the fundamental challenges of maintaining security in a 127-year-old facility persist.

In fact, a historic entry gate from 1895 was recently closed for security reasons, requiring the redirection of inmate intake procedures. Operational rules now limit yard time to 50 inmates at once across major wings to minimize security risks.

Recent Security Enhancements

The facility has made several improvements in recent years. Metal detectors have been installed in all large wings, and new initiatives have been launched to boost safety and staff welfare in this high-risk environment.

One significant development is a specially secured courtroom that opened on December 1, 2025, adjacent to the prison. This courtroom features an underground tunnel for secure transport of inmates and is designed specifically for high-security cases, including severe gang crimes and terrorism trials.

Despite these measures, the escape demonstrates that vulnerabilities remain at the Danish prison system facility. The combination of overcrowding, staffing shortages, and aging infrastructure creates an environment where security breaches remain possible.

Public Safety Warning

Police emphasize that members of the public should not attempt to apprehend Petersen themselves. Given his conviction for murder and attempted murder, he is considered dangerous.

It is also illegal to assist or hide an escaped prisoner. Police have not yet determined whether Petersen received help during his escape. Simonsen stated that it is too early to confirm whether he had assistance.

The investigation into the escape is ongoing. Authorities are working to determine exactly how Petersen managed to breach multiple security measures and whether any procedural failures contributed to his successful escape.

Meanwhile, the incident has renewed concerns about security protocols at Danish correctional facilities. The escape of a preventively detained murderer from what should be a secure facility will likely prompt further scrutiny of operational procedures and security infrastructure at Vestre Prison and similar institutions across Denmark.
