Gnags has played its last festival concert. Frontman Peter A.G. made the announcement from the stage as the band closed Smukfest in Skanderborg on August 9, 2026.
DR reports that Peter A.G. told the audience mid-concert that the show was the final date of the band’s “Summer of Love” tour. He added that it was also Gnags’ last festival concert ever. The performance took place at Bøgescenerne in front of thousands of festivalgoers in Skanderborg.
Ekstra Bladet also reported the stage announcement, noting that Peter A.G. said he personally wanted to finish at the top. With the concert, the band closed a chapter of 60 years on the Danish festival circuit, according to DR.
At the same time, Peter A.G. said the group will go on tour in the spring of 2027. DR writes that it has tried since Monday morning to interview him and to confirm whether the 2027 tour will be a farewell tour. That has not been clarified, and other Danish media have speculated about the same question.
A remark from January
In DR’s P1 program Ugens Gæst in January 2026, Peter A.G. said he had wanted to park Gnags as early as 2022. The plan then was a large farewell tour of indoor venues across the country. Those plans changed when guitarist Per Frost died.
In that January interview, he said the band should have closed, but not in that way. He described two possible paths ahead, either many more records or an ending. Asked what he himself hoped for, he answered that he could say when August arrived, a remark DR now links to the Smukfest announcement.
Ole Rosenstand Svidt, magazine editor at Gaffa and its former editor-in-chief, told DR that the decision smells of stopping, or at least of a longer break. He has covered music for years in the band’s home city of Aarhus. He noted that dropping all festival concerts fits poorly with ambitions to release many new records.
Rosenstand Svidt called Gnags one of Denmark’s most important bands of the past 50 years. As he told DR, Peter A.G. has written songs that took the temperature of Danes, including the hit “Danmark,” which addressed Danish attitudes to immigration.
The music journalist added that he finds it a shame that the band is dropping festivals. He said he would have liked to see Gnags play a final concert on Orange Scene, as TV-2 did at Roskilde Festival earlier in 2026, according to DR.
