A family from Odense is collecting bottles and cans for deposit money to fund a Formula 1 trip next summer, aiming to save about 15,000 kroner so their two young children can see Lewis Hamilton race.
Six-year-old Jamie Lyngsø and four-year-old Shelby Lyngsø drive with their parents to the deposit station in Odense with the car full of bottles. DR reported on August 9, 2026 that the two Formula 1 fans want to attend a race next summer and see their hero, driver Lewis Hamilton.
The family estimates the trip will cost around 15,000 kroner. To reach that sum, the parents have spent the past few weeks asking other people for their bottle and can deposits on Facebook and Instagram, according to DR. They also collect in daily life and travel to summer events on Funen to gather returnables.
At Grøn Koncert in Odense, Jamie and Shelby collected deposits and sold drinks and snacks, DR reported. The family has been at it for a couple of weeks and says it has already put aside the first 5,000 kroner. That has come mainly from deposit collection, according to their mother, Marie Louise Lyngsø.
She told DR the household is ready to use other methods as well. A cake sale was planned for the weekend, she said, because she wants activities the children can take part in themselves. Marie Louise Lyngsø, who is also a Formula 1 fan, described the effort as a family project.
Per DR, she said it is very important to her that the children understand they have to earn money themselves. The savings drive is therefore built around tasks the two can join, rather than money handed to them.
A household built around the sport
The family’s apartment in Odense leaves little doubt about their interest. DR describes banners on the walls, Lego Formula 1 cars on the shelves, collector cards on the tables and Formula 1 drawings next to the colored pencils.
Marie Louise Lyngsø said a trip next summer would be enormously big for all of them, especially after working so hard for it. The first donated deposits were picked up a couple of weeks ago, according to DR.
The timing of the campaign is tied to the family’s target of attending a race next summer. That leaves roughly a year to build up the remaining savings, based on the figures DR reported. The cake sale planned for this weekend shows the fundraising is running now rather than later.
DR appears to be the only outlet to have reported on the family’s savings campaign so far. No other national Danish news organization has published an account of Jamie and Shelby Lyngsø’s collection effort.
