Denmark’s Package Shops Overrun by Holiday Chaos

Online shopping frenzy during Black Friday and Christmas has overwhelmed package shops across Denmark, forcing kiosks to reorganize and hire extra help to manage record-breaking parcel volumes.

Massive Spike in Deliveries

After Black Friday, the Christmas shopping rush has fully taken over. In Copenhagen, stores and shopping spots are seeing unprecedented traffic as Danes hurry to finish their gift lists. Parcel shops like Send N Hent in the capital are now flooded with deliveries. Employee Nasim Shah said they normally handle about 500 packages a month, but this number triples in November and December.

Because of that, the store had to make quick adjustments to keep up. They hired more staff, moved equipment, and bought extra shelves to handle the influx. Compared to last year, the number of parcels has increased by about 10 to 15 percent.

Holiday Rush Brings New Customers

Interestingly, the holiday boom is not just a headache. For many local kiosks, it brings more people through the door. According to Jesper Lundberg, head of the National Association of Local Shops, these months are a financial lifeline for small stores. What once attracted customers—like tobacco and alcohol—has now been replaced by parcel collection points that bring a new kind of shopper.

While employees across the country work under more pressure, many kiosk owners see the season as a much-needed opportunity to increase earnings. After all, the rest of the year tends to be slower, so this short burst of activity helps balance the books.

A Record-Breaking Season Online

Last December, Danish Industry reported record online sales, with 87 percent of Danes making at least one digital purchase. E-commerce platforms like Zalando and Temu topped the list of favorites, showing how deeply online shopping has rooted itself in Danish consumer culture. Once again, this November has set another record, though exact figures have yet to be released, according to the Danish Chamber of Commerce’s e-commerce director, Niels Ralund.

Logistics companies also confirm a 10 to 15 percent rise in parcel volume this year. At the same time, more customers are turning to “click and collect” options in physical stores. The growth reflects how digital and physical retail have intertwined, particularly around major shopping events.

Even postal services have noticed the load. PostNord reports a strong jump in deliveries far beyond normal levels. To manage the strain, they are urging people to pick up packages as soon as possible from their local shops. As a small incentive, those who collect promptly are automatically entered into a raffle for a 500 DKK gift card.

How to Help Ease the Holiday Chaos

With package volumes continuing to rise, PostNord has shared five tips to help keep things running smoothly:

  • Show some “next-package kindness,” and collect your parcels quickly.
  • Use the PostNord app to track your deliveries.
  • Have your package number ready when it’s your turn.
  • Remember to bring valid ID.
  • If collecting for someone else, bring both your authorization and ID.

Following these steps helps reduce the workload for staff, keeps queues shorter, and ensures packages don’t pile up. As online buying keeps soaring year after year, systems must keep adapting to handle the demand.

Retail Trends Point to Continued Growth

Online shopping is clearly here to stay in Denmark. Even though the rush causes temporary chaos, it also demonstrates just how powerful digital retail has become. The convenience of shopping from home, combined with fast delivery or local pick-up options, has permanently reshaped consumer habits.

For many Danish consumers, Black Friday marks the real start of the holiday season. And with shops and delivery services already struggling to keep up, the country’s e-commerce ecosystem faces one of its busiest, yet most profitable, months of the year.
