Battery Fires Explode in Danish Homes – How to Stay Safe

With battery-powered devices booming in Danish homes, particularly e-bikes and smart garden tools, the number of home fires caused by lithium-ion batteries has nearly tripled in just four years, prompting urgent warnings and safety advice from the insurance sector.

Sharp Rise in Home Fires Caused by Batteries

The increasing popularity of electric bicycles, scooters, robotic lawn mowers, and other lithium-ion-powered devices has led to a concerning uptick in residential battery fires across Danish homes. According to new data released by the Danish Emergency Management Agency and the national organization Danske Beredskaber, there were 143 confirmed incidents of battery-related fires in 2024. This is a dramatic rise from just 52 incidents in 2020—an increase of almost 175%. More devices mean more risk for Danish homes.

Behind this growing hazard is the widespread home use of lithium-ion batteries, which are susceptible to overheating, short-circuiting, or even exploding if not handled correctly. The rapid increase in the use of rechargeable consumer electronics is being mirrored by a rising trend in fire emergencies reported by fire departments across the country. Always use batteries carefully to stay safe at home.

Charging Poses Significant Risk

One of the most dangerous moments for lithium-ion batteries is during charging. Improper charging practices or defective equipment can lead to short circuits, overheating, or the release of toxic fumes. Fires can escalate quickly, pose a threat to human life, and be extremely challenging to extinguish due to the chemical properties of the batteries.

Fire incidents tend to be especially devastating at night when residents are sleeping and less likely to detect early signs of trouble. Experts warn against charging such devices overnight or in locations where the batteries are unsupervised, such as garages or hallways, which are frequently travel or escape paths in emergency situations.

If Insurance Offers Practical Guidelines

If, the Nordic region’s largest insurance provider with over 4.5 million customers, is responding to this development with a comprehensive public awareness campaign. The company’s years of experience in risk prevention have equipped them with insights into fire safety related to lithium-ion batteries.

To help Danish homes and businesses minimize risk, If has released six key recommendations:

  1. Supervise Battery Charging: Do not charge batteries overnight or when unattended. Always use manufacturer-approved chargers.
  2. Prevent Overheating: Charge batteries in well-ventilated areas and avoid placing them on soft surfaces like beds or couches, which can trap heat.
  3. Keep Clear Emergency Exits: Never charge batteries in hallways or stairwells where a fire could block evacuation routes.
  4. Inspect Regularly: Do not use batteries that show signs of damage, such as bulging, leakage, or broken casing.
  5. Install Fire Safety Equipment: Make sure smoke detectors and powder-based fire extinguishers are installed on all levels of the home, especially in areas where batteries are charged.
  6. Follow Manufacturer Instructions: Always read and adhere to the safety guidelines provided with battery-powered devices and accessories.

Implications Beyond Residential Homes

This is not just a domestic issue—businesses are also seeing a spike in battery-related fire incidents, underscoring the wider implications for workplace safety. Offices and warehouses storing large volumes of electronic equipment with lithium-ion batteries are particularly at risk.

The Danish Fire Protection Association has urged both individuals and organizations to treat battery devices with caution, particularly those purchased from third-party sellers or brands that may not comply with EU safety standards.

Supporting a Safer Future

If Insurance, now incorporating the Danish provider Topdanmark since 2025, has made fire safety a strategic priority, offering guidance through direct communication with customers and updated resources on their official website. Their outreach includes SMS notifications ahead of extreme weather and best practice checklists related to fire and flood risks.

As lithium-ion batteries become a staple in Danish homes, the need for fire prevention education will be more critical than ever. With the number of battery-related fires projected to continue rising, proactive safety habits and awareness remain essential tools in minimizing damage and protecting lives.
