A tractor pulling two trailer loads of straw bales caught fire in Holev on Funen on Sunday evening. The flames came close to buildings at Holevgård before Beredskab Fyn got the situation under control.
The fire began while a farm worker was driving the tractor through Holev, Avisen Danmark reports. According to farm owner Martin Bang, the worker drove toward Holevgård to reach a water hose.
The tractor came to a stop near one of the farm’s side buildings, where the fire developed heavily. It scorched a walnut tree and turned a small gate on the building coal black, as reported by Avisen Danmark.
Beredskab Fyn received the alarm on Sunday at 18:09, according to Martin Bang. Emergency teams were still at the site on Monday morning when he left for work.
Bang said he became nervous when the gate beside the tractor began to smoulder and steam. He then hurried to move items out of the adjoining building, including an old vintage car.
There are no animals on the property apart from a dog. Bang works as an electrician and took over the farm from his father, Erik Bang. He has leased the land, 150 hectares, to his older brother Henrik Bang, who lives in Flødstrup.
The tractor that burned belonged to Henrik Bang and was 10 years old. He believes an oil hose broke and that the oil then reached the exhaust. He stressed that the cause is not known with full certainty.
Henrik Bang was driving grain in Flødstrup when he heard about the fire. He brought his telehandler to Holev to unload the burning bales from the two trailers. The bales were then taken out to a field for controlled burning.
He explained that the big bales were pressed so hard that little air remained inside. For that reason they did not burn quickly, which made it possible to move them.
