Denmark’s minister for nature and animal welfare said on August 7 that a new wolf regulation zone is being created near Nørre Nebel in West Jutland. A wolf had approached children playing in private gardens there in three separate incidents.
According to DR, all three incidents took place on August 5 within a short time of each other. Authorities believe the same animal was behind each of them. The town lies in western Jutland, north of the Oksbøl area.
Minister Christian Rabjerg Madsen said the wolf came close to the children without behaving aggressively. As reported by DR, it did not leave the sites even when people shouted or clapped loudly. He called the animal’s lack of shyness toward people unacceptable.
The Danish Nature Agency has patrolled the affected area with rifles since Thursday, according to the minister. Thermal drones that can locate the animal will also be put to use. Rabjerg Madsen said the wolf should be shot as quickly as possible.
The new regulation zone is a geographic extension of the existing zone at Oksbøl, where problem wolves have been observed before. It stretches north to Hvide Sande, about 30 kilometers north of Nørre Nebel. Inside the zone, the agency can regulate the animal on the same terms as at Oksbøl, and private landowners can apply for permission to shoot it.
Ekstra Bladet reported the same incidents and the link between the two zones. It noted that the Oksbøl zone has 14 active regulation permits held by private landowners and the Nature Agency.
Legal basis and earlier cases
As stated by Styrelsen for Grøn Arealomlægning og Vandmiljø, wolves are protected under EU habitat rules. The agency says they can only be regulated under special conditions and with a permit that it issues. Netnatur has described the same mechanism in the Oksbøl area, where problem wolves may be shot once permits are granted.
Politiken reported that researchers recently reviewed 13 wolf-human encounters in the Oksbøl area. They concluded the cases involved a single young wolf showing problematic behavior, including approaching people. Rabjerg Madsen said he suspects the Nørre Nebel animal is the same wolf that previously caused problems at Oksbøl.
DR reports that the immediate trigger for the decision was the three encounters on August 5. The minister said the animal’s failure to retreat despite loud attempts to scare it away prompted the new zone and the drone deployment. Naturstyrelsen said in a notice from January 2026 that the Oksbøl wolf response group had been placed on standby, and that escalating problematic behavior could lead to a regulation permit.
