Five boys were detained and charged under the Danish Weapons Act after a bottle filled with chemicals exploded at Rynkevangskolen in Kalundborg on Tuesday.
Mid and West Zealand Police received the report at 11:33 a.m. on Tuesday, September 1, 2026. According to DR, the explosion took place on a ball field at the school, while officers were also present at several other locations in Kalundborg.
Officers arriving at the scene found one bottle that had exploded and a second bottle lying next to it. That is according to Henriette Vogt, deputy police inspector with Mid and West Zealand Police. The bottles were probably made by one or more pupils at the school, police said.
No one was injured in the explosion. The second bottle was detonated in a controlled manner by the Danish Defence bomb disposal unit, EOD, as reported by DR. Police said they could not yet determine what the bottle had contained, because tests were still underway.
Five boys aged 14 and 15 charged
In a statement published on its news list, Mid and West Zealand Police said the five detained boys are two 14-year-olds and three 15-year-olds. All five are charged with violating the Weapons Act in connection with the explosion at Rynkevangskolen.
Vogt said the young people would give their statements to police, who would then assess what should happen next. Per the police statement, two bottles containing chemicals were found on the school’s ball field, one of which had already gone off.
The school was evacuated during the operation. Police said the school and the surrounding area were searched with explosives detection dogs, and that no further objects were found.
The police district stated that all children and staff had been moved away from the school. Officers said there was no danger to anyone in the area while the investigation continued.
Parents were asked to follow the instructions issued by police and by the school. According to the force, those instructions were posted by the school on Aula, the digital communication platform used by Danish primary schools.
DR updated its report at 6:08 p.m. on Tuesday with new information and a new headline, after the five boys had been detained. The force originally announced only that officers were present at Rynkevangskolen, where an incident was being examined.
Police have not said whether the boys were released after questioning. The investigation into the contents of the bottles was still ongoing when police last updated the case on Tuesday.
