A runner met an adult wolf and a wolf cub Friday in Bunken Klitplantage in North Jutland. Danish authorities are now advising people to stay out of the area.
The encounter took place Friday, August 7, in Bunken Klitplantage, south of Råbjerg Mile in North Jutland. DR reports that the Styrelsen for Grøn Arealomlægning og Vandmiljø (SGAV) described the incident on its website.
According to SGAV, the runner came upon a wolf cub and an adult wolf. The adult animal showed its teeth and raised its hackles to protect the cub. The runner tried to scare the wolf away by shouting at it.
After a while, the adult wolf withdrew from the scene, and the cub followed it. SGAV now recommends that people do not move through the area until the situation has been assessed more closely.
The agency has had experts from DCE at Aarhus University and Naturhistorisk Museum Aarhus assess the encounter. Their conclusion was that the situation was not dangerous, and that the wolf’s behavior was aimed at getting the runner away from the cub.
Signs and alternative routes
SGAV says information signs will be put up in the area, pointing to alternative routes. Anyone who does need to visit the plantation is urged to show particular caution, according to the agency.
BT reported the same incident and noted that the recommendation to stay away is intended to avoid potential conflict situations. The outlet also repeated SGAV’s account that the adult wolf was defending the cub, and that experts judged the situation to be non-dangerous.
SGAV is asking residents to come forward with their own observations. The agency wants to hear from people who have experienced wolves at close range in Bunken Klitplantage within the past month. Reports can be sent to ulv@sgav.dk, with photos or videos as documentation.
Per BT, SGAV ties the warning directly to Friday’s encounter rather than to any broader change in policy. The area remains subject to the stay-away recommendation while the assessment continues.
Wolves returned to Denmark around 10 years ago, DR notes. The species has since been the subject of monitoring and debate, including rising wolf numbers and the authorities’ wolf management plan.
Bunken Klitplantage is a coastal plantation area in the northern part of Jutland, close to the dune landscape at Råbjerg Mile. SGAV has not said how long the recommendation against entering the area will remain in place.
