A release of toxic smoke at the FMC Rønland chemical plant in Thyborøn on Friday brought police and firefighters to the site. One employee was taken to a hospital for a check and has since been discharged.
The incident took place on the morning of Friday, September 18, at the plant long known as the Cheminova factory. DR reports that Mid and West Jutland Police recorded a release of toxic smoke at the facility.
The information was given by the police district on Politi Update, its public information channel. According to the police, there was no danger to people. Authorities ended the response around midday on Friday.
What police and the company say
Police received the report at 9:45 a.m. Duty officer Simon Skelkjær said one employee was lightly injured after contact with a chemical at the plant. The worker was driven away for a medical check.
Per Skelkjær, the event was not a fire. He described it instead as a chemical substance that developed smoke or vapor. Police stated on Friday that the incident began in a laboratory and was limited to one building.
FMC Rønland said in a written statement that there was visible smoke at the chemical plant on Friday. The company confirmed that an employee was driven to a hospital as a safety precaution.
As stated by plant manager Jakob Kyllesbech, the examination showed no signs of exposure. He said the employee had been discharged and was on the way home. Kyllesbech also thanked staff and the internal and external emergency services for what he called professional, fast and safe handling of the incident.
The plant sits at Rønland near Thyborøn in western Jutland. It carried the Cheminova name for decades and now operates under the name FMC Rønland. Both police and firefighters were present at the site during Friday’s operation.
DR’s report, produced by the news agency Ritzau, was published at 3:38 p.m. on Friday. It did not name the substance involved in the laboratory incident. No evacuation of the surrounding area was reported by the police.
The response was carried out by the same regional emergency teams that cover the Lemvig area. Police did not report any further injuries beyond the single employee. No information was given about damage to the building.
