Rob Reiner’s son indicted for parents’ murders

A Los Angeles grand jury has indicted Nick Reiner, 32, on murder charges over the killings of his parents, film director Rob Reiner and producer Michele Singer Reiner.

DR reports that the district attorney’s office in Los Angeles announced the indictment on Wednesday. Nick Reiner is accused of stabbing his parents to death in their home in Brentwood, a suburb of Los Angeles. He has pleaded not guilty to the killings.

Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Singer Reiner, 70, were found dead on December 14, 2025. According to DR, the couple were found by their daughter, Romy, with what has been described as multiple stab wounds. Nick Reiner was arrested hours later and charged with murder under special circumstances.

Indictment replaces earlier charges

As reported by Reuters, the grand jury indictment replaces the earlier charges in the case. It means prosecutors can move toward a trial without first presenting the case at a preliminary hearing. Reuters also noted that a conviction could still carry the death penalty.

Beyond the murder charge, Nick Reiner is charged with lying in wait and with the use of a dangerous and deadly weapon. District Attorney Nathan Hochman said in a statement, per Reuters, that the indictment brings prosecutors a step closer to a trial and to justice. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced the decision publicly on Wednesday.

A federal grand jury is a panel of civilians convened by prosecutors. Its members review the evidence in a case and decide whether there is a basis to bring charges. The panel does not determine guilt or innocence.

The night before the killings

DR reports that Rob Reiner, Michele Singer Reiner and Nick Reiner attended a Christmas party at the home of comedian and talk show host Conan O’Brien the evening before the couple were found dead. Several media outlets have reported that Nick and Rob Reiner argued at the party, according to DR. The circumstances of the case have not been detailed further by prosecutors.

Rob Reiner directed films including “When Harry Met Sally”, “A Few Good Men” and “The American President”. His career spanned several decades in Hollywood, both as a director and as an actor. Michele Singer Reiner worked as a film producer.

Father and son worked together in 2015 on the semi-autobiographical film “Being Charlie”. The film follows a young man trying to break free of addiction after repeated stays in treatment. In connection with the film, Nick Reiner spoke openly about his own struggles with drug abuse and mental illness.
