This is not the first time that Reshopper has taken such measures. In 2023, the company discontinued support for Temu, another Chinese e-commerce site, for similar reasons.
Reshopper Bans Shein And Takes a Stand Against Unsafe Products
Danish online marketplace Reshopper, which specializes in secondhand children’s clothing and goods, has announced a decisive move to ban all listings related to the Chinese fast fashion giant Shein. The company cites serious product safety concerns as the basis for its decision, removing over 6,700 product listings associated with the brand within just 24 hours.
Reshopper, headquartered in Aarhus, stated that the action is part of its broader commitment to creating a safer and more trustworthy environment for families. According to recent findings from the Danish Consumer Council (Forbrugerrådet Tænk), a significant number of products sold through international platforms such as Shein and Temu fail to meet the European Union’s strict safety standards. Specifically, some of these items contain harmful chemical substances, which may pose health risks, especially to children.
Second Global Retailer Dropped in Two Years
This isn’t the first time Reshopper has taken such measures. In 2023, the company discontinued support for another major Chinese e-commerce site, Temu, for similar reasons. Both decisions were motivated by concerns around chemical safety, product labeling, and transparency, factors that are particularly important to parents shopping for young children.
With Shein’s removal, Reshopper has reaffirmed its position as a child- and family-focused platform. The company emphasized that it does not see itself as a gatekeeper for parental decisions but is acting in response to trust issues raised by users and independent safety analyses.
Millions of Listings Updated
On the day of the announcement, more than three million items were listed in Reshopper’s children’s category. A search for “Shein” produced 6,757 results, an indication of the brand’s growing popularity among Danish consumers. However, as Reshopper bans Shein, the following day all Shein-related listings had vanished from the platform.
This swift purge was enabled by automated backend controls that blocked “Shein” from being added as a brand during product listing, as well as algorithms trained to detect references to the company within item descriptions and titles. If a listing containing Shein-related content escapes detection, Reshopper encourages customers to report the item through the platform’s buyer protection system to receive a refund.
A New Approach to Product Transparency
To support families dealing with health concerns such as allergies, Reshopper already allows sellers to mark products as free from fragrances or animal fibers. This enables buyers to shop with added confidence, particularly when shopping for children with sensitivities.
Still, distinguishing between safe and unsafe items from major retail platforms remains difficult for consumers. The concern with brands like Shein stems not only from their high-volume, low-cost products but also from opaque supply chains and inadequate regulatory compliance.
Shein Yet to Respond
As of now, Shein has not issued a response to the ban. The company, which has faced global criticism over labor practices and environmental concerns, has also come under increased scrutiny in Europe for failing to meet chemical and safety regulations.
Shein, founded in 2008, has rapidly expanded its global reach and, according to analytics firm Statista, generated over $30 billion in revenue in 2022. However, ongoing allegations and watchdog reports have prompted several international retailers and marketplaces to reconsider their partnerships with the brand.
Growing Awareness Among Danish Consumers
In Denmark, consumer awareness around toxic chemicals such as PFAS, parabens, and phthalates has grown in recent years. Danish environmental and consumer groups have launched public campaigns aimed at educating families about the dangers of certain consumer goods—especially those that enter homes without sufficient transparency or testing.
As Reshopper bans Shein, this coincides with broader efforts by the Danish authorities and EU regulators to tighten controls over imported goods sold via third-party online marketplaces. As more families turn to resale sites for affordable and sustainable shopping, platforms like Reshopper are stepping up efforts to ensure the products they host are both safe and reliable.

With this latest restriction, Reshopper is positioning itself not just as a resale marketplace, but as a trusted consumer advocate in Denmark’s growing secondhand economy.
