The Copenhagen Sprint, Denmark’s inaugural World Tour cycling race, will take place over two days, impacting traffic significantly in Roskilde and Copenhagen as the event unfolds.
The Copenhagen Sprint will be a thrilling celebration of cycling, with races scheduled on Saturday, June 21, and Sunday, June 22, 2024. The women’s race will kick off the event in Roskilde, leading to a vibrant conclusion in the heart of Copenhagen, while the men will take to the route the following day. Both races will cover a nearly identical course, but with men’s cyclists including some additional loops around Frederikssund and Fredensborg.
Starting from Roskilde’s iconic Viking Ship Museum, the route will take cyclists northward to Frederikssund, passing through Hillerød and by Fredensborg before leading them to Humlebæk and down through Ballerup, ultimately entering Copenhagen from the west. The race will finish on a circuit in Copenhagen, specifically at the Statens Museum for Kunst (The National Gallery of Denmark), which serves as the race’s finish line.
Traffic Impacts and Recommendations
Tobias Hoff, director of the Copenhagen Sprint, expressed excitement about hosting some of the world’s top cyclists for the first-ever World Tour race in Denmark. He highlighted the expected traffic disruptions due to the event, urging citizens and commuters to prepare accordingly. “The race will significantly affect traffic along and around the route on both Saturday and Sunday, and it’s important for everyone to be aware to ensure the best experience for participants and spectators alike,” Hoff stated.
The impact on traffic will be particularly pronounced in Roskilde and Copenhagen, where roads will be closed to vehicular traffic approximately 60 minutes before the cyclists arrive. Roads will reopen gradually as the race and support vehicles pass. The course in Copenhagen will be closed from Saturday morning at 5 AM until Sunday evening at 10 PM, which will greatly affect both private and public transportation throughout the city.
To navigate the disruptions, authorities recommend cycling, using the metro, or walking around the city during the event days. To alleviate congestion near the finish area and festival site, managed bicycle parking will be available at Fredens Park and Stokholmsgade. Importantly, motorways will remain unaffected and accessible throughout the weekend.
