Recent revelations expose a Danish news channel ‘Velinformeret’ as a product of Russian state funding, involving Zenia Grynberg, a former Liberal Alliance member, in a controversial information campaign.

The Hidden Ties Behind the Danish News Channel ‘Velinformeret’

The Danish news channel ‘Velinformeret’, which claims to provide the “full truth” to its readers, has recently come under scrutiny. It presents itself as a reputable source of information on various topics, but hidden documents reveal a controversial narrative. These documents indicate that the channel is influenced and financed by Russian state resources, specifically through a woman named Zenia Grynberg, who resides in Moscow.

Zenia Grynberg, originally from Russia, moved to Denmark in 1990 and was previously active in Danish politics as a member of the Liberal Alliance until 2015. Following her departure from the party, she embarked on establishing a peace movement on the left side of the political spectrum. Grynberg has had a longstanding involvement in organizing pro-Russian events in Denmark, including demonstrations and parades.

Most notably, she prepared placards for a 2014 protest in Copenhagen against the “atrocious war crimes” of the Ukrainian government. In 2023, she participated in an online conference discussing the “resurgence of fascism in Europe,” showcasing her continued engagement in public discourse regarding geopolitical tensions.

The Role of Russian State Funding

Internal documents obtained by DR (Danish Broadcasting Corporation) show that Grynberg applied for financial assistance from a Russian state fund known as Pravfond in late 2022. This fund is officially claimed to support Russian citizens abroad and promote cultural initiatives but is reportedly used for influence operations and covering intelligence activities. Grynberg’s application stated that ‘Velinformeret’ aims to “inform Danish civil society about the consequences of the Danish government’s Russophobic policies.”

According to a document dated April 2023, Pravfond approved 2.4 million rubles (approximately $32,000) to support the operation of ‘Velinformeret’ for the remainder of the year. The channel has garnered around 1,500 followers on Telegram, where it has been active for over three years, producing an aggressive average of 40 posts per day.

The content published by ‘Velinformeret’ has sparked concern among experts due to its heavy bias and frequent disinformation. Posts on the channel have framed the ongoing war in Ukraine as “Russia’s self-defense against Nazism” and have labeled Denmark as “NATO’s biggest lapdog.” Jakob Bæk Kristensen, a lecturer at Roskilde University who researches the sharing of information on alternative news media, emphasized the mixed messaging of lies and truths found in ‘Velinformeret’s posts. This deliberate strategy intends to destabilize and challenge Western opinions, particularly regarding the conflict in Ukraine.

The Impact of Russian Information Operations

The involvement of ‘Velinformeret’ in Russian propaganda efforts has raised alarms among intelligence agencies. The Danish Security and Intelligence Service (PET) confirmed that Russia utilizes organizations throughout Europe to execute influence operations, aiming to amplify divides on critical issues, notably the support for Ukraine and broader Western policies.

Scholarly analysis of the Russian documents indicates a systematic approach toward influencing public opinion in Denmark on matters concerning Russia and Ukraine. Senior researcher Flemming Splidsboel from the Danish Institute for International Studies (DIIS) highlighted that this reflects a well-orchestrated Russian strategy to affect political discourse in Denmark.

The Response from Authorities

In light of these developments, authorities in Denmark and across Europe remain vigilant regarding Russian influence operations. Although PET has refrained from discussing specific individuals or cases, they have acknowledged the broader implications of Russia’s attempts to sway public sentiment and exploit ideological divisions within Western societies.

The European Union has also taken action, sanctioning Pravfond in 2023 for creating “instability and division.” Officials have characterized the fund as a vehicle for influence activities, signaling the EU’s commitment to countering such maneuvers.

The investigation into ‘Velinformeret’ sheds light on the complex dynamics of information warfare in the modern era. With a flair for shaping narratives through various media platforms, entities like ‘Velinformeret’ underscore the necessity for vigilance in distinguishing between legitimate news and government-sponsored propaganda.

As the global political landscape continues to evolve, the implications of this case highlight the ongoing battle against disinformation and the critical role that informed citizens and institutions play in safeguarding democratic values. The presence of Russian-funded channels in Denmark illustrates the fine line between free expression and the potential for foreign influence, posing challenges to public discourse and national security alike.
