Prepare Now: Danish Insurance and Weather Warning

With heavy rains and possible cloudbursts expected across Denmark on Monday, Danish insurance and weather experts are urging residents to take preventive steps to avoid property damage.

Severe Weather Expected to Impact Most of Denmark

The Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) has issued warnings of potential cloudbursts—defined as rainfall exceeding 15 mm within 30 minutes—and intense rain across much of the country starting Monday afternoon and continuing into the evening. Although the weekend weather has been warm and pleasant, conditions are set to change dramatically as a low-pressure system brings severe precipitation. The weather can change fast, so it’s good to stay aware and be ready for heavy rain, for example by protecting basements.

Due to the warning, major Danish insurance firms including Alm. Brand and Codan are encouraging homeowners to take extra precautions in and around their homes to prevent extensive water damage. Danish insurance and weather experts report that roughly 70% of the incidents related to heavy rains and flooding can be avoided through proactive measures. Preparing now can save a lot of work later. A lot of water damage can easily be avoided if you prepare your home in time.

Danger Heightened by Prolonged Drought Conditions

Ironically, the lasting dry weather over the past weeks may worsen the impact of the incoming storm. Much of Denmark is currently experiencing a relatively high drought index, which limits the soil’s ability to absorb large volumes of water quickly. When rain falls on very dry ground, water tends to run off rather than soak into the soil, increasing the likelihood of flooding in low-lying areas, basements, and gardens.

Residents with homes situated near bodies of water or in lower elevations are especially vulnerable. Danish insurance and weather agencies emphasize that even short-lived cloudbursts can cause significant water intrusion if precautions aren’t in place.

Recommendations to Prevent Water Damage

To help Danes prepare for the storm, Alm. Brand has issued a checklist of simple but effective steps homeowners should take immediately:

  • Clean rain gutters and downspouts: Make sure they are free of debris such as leaves, which can obstruct the flow of water and cause overflow.
  • Inspect basement drainage: Check that drainage systems are open and unblocked, especially in older homes.
  • Elevate valuable items: Property stored in basements should be raised at least 30 centimeters (almost 12 inches) above the floor, ideally using a watertight platform or pallet.
  • Avoid storing important belongings in basement areas that are prone to flooding.
  • Check building integrity: Walk around the house and inspect for cracks or holes in walls, foundations, and roofs. Repair any vulnerable points where water might seep in.
  • Secure doors and windows: Ensure all are tightly closed. Add weatherproof sealing strips or waterproof tape on vulnerable frames to prevent seepage.

For homes located in flood-prone regions, particularly those with basements near coastlines or rivers, added caution is recommended. Water-activated sealing tape can be applied to doors and window frames—these expand upon contact with water to block further ingress.

Insurance Firms on Alert

Alm. Brand, one of Denmark’s largest financial and insurance providers, estimates that tens of thousands of their policyholders may be affected by the upcoming storm. The company is proactively sending personalized risk advice to over 80,000 customers believed to be located in areas most vulnerable to flash floods.

Founded in 1792, Alm. Brand is a trusted name in Danish insurance and forms part of the Alm. Brand Group, covering all essential financial services for both individuals and businesses across Denmark.

Residents Urged to Act Now

Danish insurance and weather companies alike stress that time is of the essence. With temporary weather relief expected only late Monday night, Danes should act swiftly to prepare homes and secure valuables. Many of the recommended actions can be completed in an hour or two and may prevent costly damage and significant inconvenience in the event of flooding.

With Denmark having already experienced several bouts of extreme weather in July, including heatwaves, lightning storms and sudden downpours, it is more crucial than ever for residents to adopt a vigilant and preventive approach. As unpredictable weather becomes more common due to climate change, integrating these precautions into routine home maintenance may help Danes adapt to the new normal.
