Pia Kjærsgaard Wins Most Votes, Loses Power

Veteran politician Pia Kjærsgaard received the highest number of personal votes in Denmark’s regional elections, while several other high-profile candidates fell short of leadership roles despite strong support at the polls.

Regional Election Highlights Across Denmark

Denmark’s regional elections have concluded, bringing clear winners — but not always the ones securing leadership seats. The results reveal a pattern that personal votes do not necessarily translate into top political positions.

In Region East Denmark, Pia Kjærsgaard from the Danish People’s Party (DF) stormed ahead with an impressive 98,836 personal votes, the highest total in the country. Her decision to remain in politics after previously signaling retirement paid off with widespread voter support. Still, she was left out of the region’s leadership negotiations, where the chairmanship instead went to Social Democrat Lars Gaardhøj.

Social Democrats Lose Ground Despite Big Support

In the Central Denmark Region, Anders Kühnau from the Social Democrats gathered 38,091 votes, placing second overall nationwide. Yet he lost his regional chairmanship to Liberal Party (Venstre) candidate Anders G. Christensen. This outcome continued the broader trend of shifting alliances, where majority votes did not automatically secure leadership.

Similarly, Kühnau’s party has faced frustration in several regions after failing to form coalitions, an issue that has drawn attention to internal strategy and to regional political stability across Denmark.

Venstre Strengthens Its Regional Presence

Venstre showed strong performances in multiple regions. In North Denmark, Mads Duedahl received 35,638 votes, equivalent to 11.2 percent of all votes in the region — a record share. His leadership of Region North Denmark marks a clear win for Venstre, as the party capitalizes on growing support in rural and northern constituencies.

In South Denmark, Bo Libergren gathered 24,578 votes and succeeded outgoing leader Stephanie Lose as regional chairman. The change marks a significant shift for the southern region, which has traditionally been a liberal stronghold but had to rebuild voter trust after years of leadership transitions.

Other Standout Candidates

In Region South Denmark, DF’s Peter Kofod received 27,899 personal votes. He initially aimed to leave national politics if he became a regional chairman, but after failing to win that role, he will remain in Parliament.

Meanwhile, Lars Gaardhøj from the Social Democrats, who secured 25,062 votes, is now chair of the newly formed Region East Denmark, leading a population of around 2.8 million.

The Conservative Party also performed well. Christoffer Buster Reinhardt won 17,909 votes, securing a place both in the new regional council and in Rudersdal’s city council following municipal elections held at the same time.

In North Denmark, former mayor Arne Boelt earned 17,470 votes, narrowly missing a higher position in the national tally. He previously criticized the left-wing coalition for backing a Liberal candidate in regional leadership negotiations, illustrating ongoing political tension between traditional allies.

Shifting Alliances and Election Patterns

Anders G. Christensen from Venstre, who won 14,876 votes in Central Denmark, replaced Kühnau as regional chairman despite having fewer votes. The result has reignited public conversation about how Danish regional politics often prioritizes coalition-building over individual turnout.

Finally, Camilla Hove Lund, also from Venstre, received 14,406 votes in Region East Denmark. She advocates improved access to doctors and healthcare equality across the region, making health policy a major issue heading into the new political term.

Looking Ahead

The elections highlighted Denmark’s complex regional framework where party cooperation often outweighs raw vote totals. While Pia Kjærsgaard’s dominant showing captured public attention, the outcomes suggest power distribution remains strategic rather than strictly numerical. As Denmark’s regional governments settle into new leadership, voters will watch closely to see how these alliances shape policies on healthcare, infrastructure, and local governance in the coming years.
