Danish Festival Traffic Expected to Cause Chaos and Travel Delays

Drivers heading to the Danish festival, Smukfest, in Skanderborg, from August 3 to August 10 should expect delays due to ongoing road construction on the E45 highway, the region’s main traffic artery.

Major Traffic Disruption Expected During Smukfest

As tens of thousands of music fans prepare to travel to the annual Smukfest in Skanderborg, authorities are warning of heavy traffic congestion caused by simultaneous highway construction. The Danish Road Directorate (Vejdirektoratet) is currently undertaking significant expansion work on the E45 motorway, the primary route used to access the festival from across the country. Drivers are advised to plan more time for their trip to the festival.

The Danish festival runs from Sunday, August 3 through Sunday, August 10, coinciding with one of the most intense periods of roadwork on the E45. The combination of increased festival traffic and restricted access due to construction is expected to cause major traffic delays in and around Skanderborg. A good recommendation would be to leave early to avoid the worst traffic.

Key Traffic Pressure Points

The most affected section of the E45 is near the exits for Ejer Bavnehøj—a known traffic bottleneck. According to the Danish Road Directorate, the risk of traffic jams is especially high during morning and early afternoon hours throughout the Danish festival week.

Motorists traveling in either direction between Skanderborg and Ejer Bavnehøj should anticipate delays, particularly between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. on weekdays. Drivers heading to the festival should expect even longer travel times on Sunday, August 3; Tuesday, August 5; and Wednesday, August 6, particularly between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Traffic Advice for Danish Festival Attendees

Festivalgoers are urged to leave early and plan their routes carefully. Drivers are encouraged to disable GPS navigation when nearing Skanderborg and instead follow the yellow signs labeled “Smukfest,” which provide the most current route guidance suited to real-time traffic conditions.

Real-time traffic updates are available at Trafikinfo.dk, and motorists are advised to monitor DR’s P4 radio traffic updates while en route.

Key recommendations for attendees:

  • Depart early, especially on peak traffic days to avoid severe delays.
  • Disregard GPS in the final approach and follow posted Smukfest signs instead.
  • Check traffic updates at Trafikinfo.dk before you hit the road.
  • Listen to local radio, P4 Trafik, for live traffic alerts while driving.

Guidance for Non-Festival Traffic

Regular motorists who are not attending Smukfest but plan to travel through the Skanderborg region during the event period should also prepare for delays. Most congestion is expected on the stretch of E45 between Skanderborg and Ejer Bavnehøj. The impact may stretch throughout the day but will peak between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

Drivers passing through the area during the Danish festival should consider alternate routes or travel times outside these high-traffic periods. They too are advised to consult Trafikinfo.dk and listen to P4 Trafik while driving through the central Jutland area.

Alternative Travel Options

Public transportation may present a more efficient and climate-friendly way to reach Smukfest. The Danish national travel planner (rejseplanen.dk) and Midttrafik, the regional public transit agency, recommend checking timetables and travel options in advance.

Given the expected congestion, using trains and buses to reach Skanderborg may help travelers avoid the delays anticipated on the highways.

Ongoing Construction on E45

The E45 motorway, also known as the East Jutland Motorway, is undergoing a large-scale expansion intended to alleviate long-term traffic pressure between Aarhus and Vejle. The current phases involve widening lanes and improving vehicle flow through multiple interchanges, including exits in the Skanderborg area.

This ambitious infrastructure project spans over 60 kilometers and targets completion in phases over several years. Early August marks a particularly challenging phase, involving ramp closures and reduced lane capacity.

Plan Ahead and Stay Updated

Both festivalgoers and general motorists are advised to plan their journeys with updated traffic forecasts in hand. With over 30,000 expected attendees at Smukfest and major roadworks in progress, advance planning is critical to a safer and less stressful trip.

For updates and detailed traffic maps, visit the Danish Road Directorate at vejdirektoratet.dk or check live traffic conditions on Trafikinfo.dk. Additional Smukfest information, including public transport guidance, can be found at smukfest.dk and midttrafik.dk/smukfest.
