Danish Defense Expands With 16 More U.S. Fighter Jets

Denmark announced plans to purchase an additional 16 F-35 fighter jets from the United States, while also entering negotiations for the acquisition of the advanced Patriot missile defense system. The moves mark a significant expansion in Danish defense capabilities.

Denmark Orders Additional U.S. Fighter Jets

During a state visit to Latvia, Denmark’s Minister of Defense, Troels Lund Poulsen, confirmed that the Danish government has placed an order for 16 additional F-35 fighter jets from the United States. This order comes in addition to the 27 F-35s Denmark has already committed to purchasing in previous agreements.

The order follows Poulsen’s recent trip to the U.S., where Danish officials worked to secure delivery agreements and prioritize Denmark in the aircraft’s production timeline. According to the Minister, securing a place “on the production line” could allow Denmark to start receiving the new aircraft as soon as 2028, much earlier than the standard delivery schedule.

With this expansion, Denmark’s fleet of F-35s will rise to a total of 43 aircraft. The added fighter jets are intended to bolster the country’s air defense capacity and ensure NATO-aligned readiness.

29 Billion Kroner Allocated for Expansion of Danish Defense

The Danish government and its defense agreement partners have earmarked 29 billion Danish kroner (approximately 4.2 billion USD) for the procurement of these additional jets. This decision represents a significant investment in Denmark’s military capabilities amid growing geopolitical tensions and increasing NATO demands.

The main goal is to strengthen national defense and ensure rapid military responsiveness. The strategic placement on the production line became possible due to delays in fighter jet acquisitions from other nations, creating an opportunity for Denmark to accelerate its order.

Patriot Defense System Also Under Negotiation to Boost Danish Defense

In parallel with the F-35 expansion, Denmark is also deep in negotiations with the United States for the purchase of the Patriot missile defense system. The Patriot system is one of the most advanced air defense technologies available, capable of intercepting incoming missiles, drones, and advanced aircraft threats.

Poulsen confirmed that discussions are ongoing and described them as “intensive,” with the purpose of either reinforcing Denmark’s territorial defense or facilitating further military aid to Ukraine.

The U.S. Department of State approved a potential sale of the Patriot system to Denmark at the end of August 2023. While Denmark already completed a major missile defense purchase from European defense contractors in September, acquiring mid and long-range, ground-based systems for more than 50 billion kroner (around 7.3 billion USD), the Patriot system is being considered for more immediate deployment.

Rather than being contradictory, these concurrent efforts form a two-track approach. Denmark is pursuing both short-term, immediate defense solutions and long-term strategic enhancements. The Patriot system may serve within the former, offering agile deployment in high-risk scenarios.

Supporting NATO and Baltic Alliance

Troels Lund Poulsen’s visit to Latvia serves not only military procurement goals but also diplomatic ones. His presence demonstrates Denmark’s commitment to NATO and to protecting its Baltic partners. Roughly 800 Danish troops are currently stationed in Latvia as part of NATO defense operations in the region.

This posture is part of Denmark’s increased military engagement following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, reflecting a broader Western response to growing threats in Eastern Europe.

Strategic Goals Aligned with Global Partnerships

The upgrades in Danish defense are consistent with its strategic objectives under NATO and move the country toward meeting the defense alliance’s military expectations. By advancing its air defense capabilities and continuing aid to Ukraine, Denmark reinforces its role as a reliable NATO partner.

The combination of fighter jet procurement and missile defense negotiation positions Denmark at the forefront of European defense preparedness. The F-35 and Patriot systems are both integral to modernized military infrastructure, ensuring that Denmark can respond swiftly to regional threats and contribute meaningfully to allied defense strategies.

As these defense deals progress, Denmark continues its transition into a nation that combines military modernization with global diplomacy and regional partnerships.
