Last Chance to Beat Denmark’s New Fitness Tax

Many Danish gyms are rushing to offer special deals before a controversial 25% VAT takes effect in 2025, raising prices for group fitness classes and other adult leisure activities.

Higher Prices for Group Fitness in the New Year

From January 1, 2025, Denmark will introduce a 25% VAT on several leisure activities, including group training sessions in fitness centers. For most gym-goers over 30, this means higher costs for classes like yoga, crossfit, or dance. Only individuals under 30 are exempt from the new tax, keeping prices lower for them.

Because of that, many fitness chains have started rolling out limited-time deals before the new rules apply. Some gyms are encouraging customers to sign up early, locking in current rates before the price jump hits in 2025.

Gyms Rush to Offer Pre-VAT Memberships

Crossfit chain Arca is among those selling one-, two-, and three-year memberships at 2025 prices until December 31, effectively avoiding the 25% tax that comes into force in the new year. Fit & Sund in Holbæk, part of a nationwide franchise, is running similar promotions, allowing members to prepay for a full year to bypass the price hike. Terms may vary between locations since each operates independently.

For many Danes who rely on regular exercise for their physical and mental well-being, these incentives may be a last chance to keep their fitness budgets under control. Given the country’s strong fitness culture, even small price increases could affect daily routines.

Some Fitness Chains Absorb the Cost

Interestingly, not all companies plan to raise prices. Loop Fitness, which operates about 130 centers across Denmark, has decided to absorb the tax instead of passing it to customers. The company expects this move to cost around 10 million Danish kroner next year but hopes it will help retain loyal members.

Administrative simplicity also played a role in the decision. Managing different rates for customers under and over 30 would require new accounting systems and financial oversight, creating more complexity than benefit.

At the same time, Loop Fitness wants to avoid competing directly with local sports associations and community centers, many of which will remain exempt from VAT. Raising prices could push members toward these alternatives.

New EU-Driven VAT Rules

The government change stems from European Union court decisions, which oblige Denmark to align its tax system with EU standards. The VAT law will apply not just to gyms but also to private instructors and other commercial entities offering lessons in non-academic subjects such as music, art, or cooking.

Starting in 2026, all businesses teaching fitness, dance, yoga, and similar activities will need to register for VAT if their taxable revenue exceeds 50,000 kroner per year. The same rule will apply to pottery, painting, or singing lessons offered commercially. However, community sports clubs, municipal music schools, and programs supported under the Public Information Act will remain tax-free.

Meanwhile, the introduction of VAT on strategy-based games like chess and bridge has been delayed until 2027 after new guidance from the Danish Tax Agency.

Impact on Consumers and the Fitness Sector

The change highlights how intertwined leisure, taxation, and personal health have become in Danish society. Fitness membership already plays a major role in everyday well-being, complementing how Danes access healthcare benefits.

While the VAT may seem minor to some, it raises questions about affordability and equal access to physical activities. For adults over 30, the increase might discourage consistent participation in organized workouts. On the other hand, gyms could use this period to innovate with flexible pricing, digital fitness products, or more holistic wellness offerings that fit changing consumer needs.

For now, those eager to keep training without paying more have only a short window before the year ends. Afterward, fitness in Denmark might look a bit different, both in pricing and participation.
