A man was seriously scalded in a wood-fired wilderness bath at a campsite at Trelde Næs near Fredericia last Friday. He was flown from the scene by helicopter, and police are still looking into how the accident happened.
The accident took place at the DanCamps campsite at Trelde Næs, north of Fredericia. According to Avisen Danmark, the man was burned when he wanted to bathe in the tub on Friday of last week.
He was flown by helicopter from the campsite and treated for burns at Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen. Information given to Fredericia Dagblad, cited by Avisen Danmark, indicates that he was scalded and burned across very large parts of his body.
The wilderness bath stood next to a rented cabin at the site. The water temperature is regulated by the guests themselves using firewood. Photos from the scene show that an ambulance, a doctor’s car, police, and a helicopter responded.
Camilla Dvinge, the owner of DanCamps at Trelde Næs, confirmed the sequence of events to Avisen Danmark. She described it as a violent, terrible, and very sad accident, and said another guest called 112. Staff opened the barrier so the ambulance could reach the scene.
Owner says no explanation has been found
Dvinge said she has no immediate explanation for how the man was injured. Per her account, nothing similar has happened before, although the campsite has rented out wilderness baths to thousands of guests over nine years. She stated that the site did exactly as it has done many times previously.
After the accident, both the supplier of the bath and the police reviewed the tub and the campsite’s procedures, according to Dvinge. She said police went through all the procedures and found nothing, and that the supplier also double-checked without finding faults. Asked whether the campsite bears responsibility, she answered that it does, as it does for other things on the site.
Avisen Danmark reports that police are investigating the case, and that there is no immediate explanation for the accident. The outlet’s report does not name the injured man or state his age, and no updated condition report has been published.
Wilderness baths, known in Danish as vildmarksbade, are outdoor tubs heated by a wood-burning stove or an external firebox. At the Trelde Næs site, guests renting a cabin manage the fire and the temperature themselves, as described in Avisen Danmark’s reporting.
