Man arrested after woman, 29, dies in Greenland hospital

Greenland police have arrested a man in connection with the death of a 29-year-old woman at a hospital in Maniitsoq. The death is being investigated as a suspicious death.

The arrest was announced by Grønlands Politi in a press release, as reported by DR on Sunday, August 23, 2026. The woman died at a hospital in Maniitsoq, on the west coast of Greenland. DR’s account was distributed by the news agency Ritzau.

According to the press release, the report reached police at 07:27 on Sunday morning. Based on the circumstances of the case, officers launched an investigation. In the same connection, police said, a man was arrested.

What police have said

The police release does not state how the woman died. It also does not say when investigators believe she died. The age of the arrested man was not disclosed.

Police did not say whether they believe the man and the woman had any relationship to each other. The release states that the next of kin have been informed. No further details about the arrest or the investigation were given.

Berlingske reported the same police update, including the arrest and the hospital setting in Maniitsoq. The newspaper also carried the 07:27 report time. It noted that police have not said how the woman died.

Per Berlingske, the police term mistænkeligt dødsfald, or suspicious death, is used when it is not clear what a person died from. The category applies when a body is found and the cause is unresolved. BT also published a short item confirming an arrest in the case.

Maniitsoq is a town in western Greenland, south of Sisimiut and north of the capital, Nuuk. It lies in the Qeqqata municipality. The hospital there is one of the regional health facilities serving the west coast.

Policing across the island is handled by Grønlands Politi, the Greenland police district. Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark and has had self-government since 2009. Justice and policing remain areas administered under Danish authority.

The available reporting points to no trigger for the case beyond the report received by police on Sunday morning. Neither DR nor Berlingske reports any charge, court appearance, or preliminary autopsy result. Police have not published a cause of death.
