Pia Malmsiø, who took part in last week’s episode of DR’s consumer program Kontant, has died at the age of 59 after a short illness.
Malmsiø, who lived on Nordfyn, died at the hospital on Sunday at around 10 a.m. Her personal assistant, Freja Friis Jensen, told DR Kontant about the death, in agreement with Malmsiø’s daughter.
According to Jensen, Malmsiø had spent the past week admitted to the hospital with pneumonia. Jensen stated that the illness was not related to the Flextrafik accident she described on television. Malmsiø suffered from juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.
Fell out of her wheelchair
The Kontant episode “De fynske flex-konger” aired on Wednesday. In it, Malmsiø described how she fell out of her wheelchair during a ride home from the doctor. She broke her arm and hit her head.
The incident happened in a Flextrafik vehicle on Nordfyn in December 2025. Per Jensen, the accident left a clear mark on Malmsiø, and the past six months had been very hard for her.
In the program, Salah Salem Al-Badri, at the time the owner of the company LS Busser, called the case regrettable. He said the company had contacted Malmsiø and reported the incident to its insurance, so she could receive compensation.
Fynbus, which coordinates Flextrafik on Funen, also expressed regret over the case. Director Rasmus Bach Mandø noted that securing passengers is part of driver training, and that drivers are expected to carry it out.
Watched the program at the hospital
Kontant visited Malmsiø in January, a few weeks after the accident. Since then she had often spoken about the coming broadcast, according to Jensen. She had been looking forward to it being published and to seeing it herself.
Jensen said Malmsiø woke at 2:30 a.m. at the hospital and wanted to watch the program. They watched it together on Jensen’s computer. Malmsiø was awake at the start, but afterward mainly listened to it.
As stated by Jensen, Malmsiø was very tired, but was fully aware that something had been broadcast that she wanted to see. Jensen described her as someone with a strong appetite for experiences and social company, despite difficult living conditions.
According to her assistant, Malmsiø had a clear goal with her participation in the program. She wanted to help others avoid ending up as she did. Jensen said Malmsiø would always do something for others if she could.
Malmsiø was 59 years old. Her death was announced by DR on Monday, four days after the episode was broadcast.
