Secure Every Entry Point
– Lock terrace and back doors and hide the keys to prevent thieves from letting themselves out.
– Use high-quality, burglar-resistant lock cylinders.
– Install window locks and check for weakened window frames, particularly at the base and edges.
– Reinforce door frames and opt for double locks on basement entries.
Create the Illusion of Someone Being Home
– Leave a few lights on using timers.
– Leave small, visible signs of daily activity, like a coffee mug or slippers, to make the home appear occupied.
Don’t Give Thieves Tools or Cover
Another effective strategy is to reduce opportunity in the surrounding environment, especially in gardens or outdoor spaces.
Eliminate Easy Access and Hiding Places
– Lock up ladders and store garden tools securely, as burglars could use them to break in.
– Trim hedges to a maximum height of 1.6 meters so the house is visible from the street.
– Cut back any shrubs or trees that grow near the façade to remove potential hiding spots.
– Install motion-sensor lights outside to alert neighbors or passersby if someone approaches.
