EV tax threshold drops to 366,200 kr Jan 1, 2027

The Danish government’s finance bill for 2027 would lower the value threshold at which electric cars start paying registration tax, from 366,200 kroner instead of today’s 419,200 kroner, from January 1.

According to reporting by DR on November 7, the proposal is part of the government’s finance bill, the finanslovsforslag, for next year. It would raise registration tax on electric cars valued above 366,200 kroner.

Buyers of an electric car priced up to 419,200 kroner currently avoid registration tax. If the proposal passes the Folketing, that threshold falls to 366,200 kroner from January 1, 2027.

Delivery date decides the price, not the order date

Ilyas Dogru, consumer economist at the motorists’ organization FDM, told DR that there is still time to buy before the change. He noted that some electric models already have delivery dates pushed into 2027, while others can still arrive this year.

The decisive factor is not when the car is bought, but when it is delivered. Mads Rørvig, managing director of the industry organization Mobility Denmark, said members are doing everything they can to bring surplus European stock to Denmark.

Dogru said most Danish buyers have a car budget below the 366,200 kroner threshold, so many will not be affected. Rørvig countered that several popular electric family cars carry price tags above the line, naming the Volkswagen ID. Buzz in particular.

Record electric share in October 2026

Figures from bilstatistik.dk, published by Mobility Denmark, show 18,875 new passenger cars were registered in October. Of those, 16,679 were electric, and 97 percent of new cars sold to private buyers were electric.

The same figures list the Toyota bZ4X, the Volkswagen ID.4 and the ID. Buzz as October’s best-selling electric models. Dogru described the new car market as a buyer’s market with hard competition, though he said there is less room to negotiate on the most sought-after brands.

What the proposed EV tax change means for internationals buying a car

Registration tax, or registreringsafgift in Danish, is a one-off tax charged when a vehicle is first registered for use in Denmark. It is the single largest reason new cars cost more here than in most neighboring countries, and it is built into the price a dealer quotes. For foreign residents comparing offers, the figure that matters is the full on-the-road price, not the pre-tax list price, as explained in our guide to the total cost of owning a car in Denmark.

The practical point from DR’s reporting is that tax treatment follows the delivery date, not the signing date. An international who orders an electric car now but receives it in 2027 would face the lower 366,200 kroner threshold, if the finance bill is adopted. The proposal still needs a majority in the Folketing, so the change is not final.

Charging access is the other variable the two named sources raised. Rørvig said buyers should check battery size and charging speed, which matter most on long trips abroad. Dogru said home or workplace charging makes an electric car pay off from the first kilometer, and that those without it may want to wait.
