Expat Housing Revolution Led By Danish Startup LifeX

What began as a personal housing challenge for a global professional in Copenhagen has now become LifeX – an innovative urban co-living solution designed to help young professionals build a home and community in Europe’s largest cities. The expat housing soultion is more than just a furnished living arrangement, it offers a built-in community.

From Frequent Moves to a Global Vision

LifeX was born out of personal necessity. After relocating to Copenhagen and moving eight times in just two years, Ritu Jain recognized a fundamental gap in the expat housing market for young, internationally mobile professionals. Originally from India, with years of study and work experience in the United States, including Kansas City and San Francisco, Jain experienced firsthand the difficulties of settling into a new city, from finding housing to navigating bureaucracy, all while adapting to a new culture and starting demanding jobs.

This reality became the foundation of LifeX, co-founded by Jain to ease the transition for young professionals starting their lives in a new city. Instead of providing just a place to sleep, the goal was to offer an integrated solution that encompasses accommodation, shared experiences, and a built-in community.

Creating Expat Housing Rooted in Community

More than a landlord, LifeX aims to combat urban isolation. The concept behind the startup combines fully furnished apartments with co-living environments designed to foster social connection, particularly valuable for those moving to new places without a local support network.

Today, many LifeX members sign on for the flexibility the concept offers, but stay because of the strong sense of belonging it fosters. Whether relocating from Aarhus to Copenhagen or São Paulo to Berlin, the challenges remain strikingly similar: starting over, often alone. LifeX responds by offering immediate community connections and a feeling of home from the moment members move in.

Rapid Expansion Across Europe

LifeX debuted in Copenhagen with a small handful of furnished, shared apartments designed to meet the needs of working professionals. Demand quickly surged, with companies like Trustpilot among the earliest clients seeking housing solutions for their international employees. This signaled that LifeX’s offerings addressed more than just individual concerns – it pointed to a significant structural issue affecting global talent mobility and urban housing.

Now, LifeX operates in six major European cities: Copenhagen, Aarhus, Berlin, Munich, Oslo, and Hamburg. The company has transformed dozens of previously underutilized or difficult-to-let large apartments into co-living spaces that combine comfort, efficiency, and communal experience.

Innovative Answers to an Expat Housing Crisis

As urban centers around the world face increasing pressure on their housing markets, LifeX is taking a different approach. Instead of contributing to the housing shortage, the company repurposes existing large apartments, many of which would remain vacant or difficult to rent, and adapts them into multiple occupancy homes featuring shared spaces and personal bedrooms.

This model provides housing for more people without requiring new construction, thus offering a more sustainable solution in densely populated cities. According to company data, LifeX has converted more than 125 units across Europe, demonstrating the viability of their model.

Additionally, by focusing on flexible lease terms, reduced upfront costs, and furnished homes, LifeX lowers the barrier to entry for young professionals, particularly international ones, who often face obstacles like high deposits, long-term contracts, and limited housing history.

Calling for Policy Innovation

LifeX also urges lawmakers to modernize housing regulations to better reflect the international, mobile, and digital-first lifestyles of today’s urban workforce. Current regulatory frameworks in most cities still cater to traditional family housing, often ignoring alternative needs such as short-term leases, shared occupancy arrangements, and international residency requirements.

Initiatives like LifeX show that innovative housing solutions do not disrupt the market but rather reveal its inefficiencies and blind spots. As urbanization continues to intensify, evolving housing policies to support co-living models could be crucial in balancing sustainability, affordability, and quality of life.

Building a Globally Connected Future

Although rooted in Denmark, LifeX embraces a global outlook. Its vision is to ease relocation across cities by maintaining a cohesive housing and community experience. Members can move seamlessly from one LifeX city to another – say from Oslo to Berlin – while retaining a familiar living environment and support network.

With co-living now a recognized trend worldwide, from New York to Tokyo, LifeX positions itself as a brand that bridges cities. With over 700 members globally and growing, it continues to redefine what it means to feel at home in a foreign place. As urban professionals become ever more mobile, solutions like LifeX may prove essential to the future of city living.
