Denmark’s Hiking Boom: Thousands of New Trails

Walking has become one of Denmark’s favorite pastimes, and finding new hiking trails is now easier than ever thanks to a boom in online route listings across the country. hiking trails, hiking Denmark, new trails, forest, nature, sport, hiking,

New Hiking Routes Spreading Across Denmark

In recent years, Denmark has seen a surge in interest in hiking. The national platform udinaturen.dk, created by the Nature Agency, the Danish Outdoor Council, and local municipalities, now offers nearly 22,000 kilometers of mapped hiking trails. That is more than double the amount available in 2021.

The platform, originally designed to make outdoor experiences easier to access, has quickly become a go-to tool for anyone looking for an adventure in the Danish countryside. On udinaturen.dk, visitors can filter by route type, difficulty, accessibility, and amenities such as shelters or tent sites. It even lists whether a trail is suitable for horseback riding or cycling, making it a versatile resource for all kinds of outdoor enthusiasts.

The Pandemic Sparked an Outdoor Revival

When the COVID-19 pandemic kept people indoors, Danes rediscovered the joy of being outside. Hiking, particularly in scenic spots such as Hareskoven just outside Copenhagen, became a national habit. What began as a temporary escape during lockdown has now turned into a long-term trend.

Given how accessible much of Denmark’s nature is, it’s not surprising that walking has developed into what many call a new “people’s sport.” The simplicity of putting on a pair of sturdy shoes and exploring a trail appeals to Danes young and old.

Walking Is Good for Both Body and Mind

Experts agree that walking builds both physical strength and mental clarity. Regular hikes can improve heart health, maintain muscle activity, and help relieve stress. The rhythm of a long walk, surrounded by quiet forests or coastal landscapes, offers a way to reset after the daily rush. For many Danes, hiking is as much about connecting with nature as it is about exercise.

Whether through local forest paths or coastal trails, Danes are learning to value the environment around them. The Nature Agency hopes this curiosity will inspire a deeper appreciation for Denmark’s ecosystems. Knowing the plants, animals, and landscapes we share space with builds awareness and respect for the fragile balance of the natural world.

Technology Meets Tradition

Behind udinaturen.dk lies the national GeoFA outdoor database. It allows municipalities to upload information about hiking routes, nature areas, and outdoor facilities. As local governments increasingly contribute, the number of available routes keeps rising.

For many, the digital database has eliminated the guesswork from exploring nature. Instead of relying on familiar loops or word-of-mouth directions, hikers can now browse curated trail maps that match their needs and interests. Because of that, people who might not otherwise venture into nature can discover something new and safe to explore.

Interestingly, this boom reflects how Danes like to merge old traditions with modern tools. The ancient Danish habit of taking long walks, known as a “gåtur,” is now supported by smartphones and GPS coordinates. It shows how deeply nature remains woven into the Danish way of life.

Encouraging More People to Step Outside

Both the Nature Agency and hiking organizations hope this trend continues. They see outdoor movement as vital not just for personal well-being but also for strengthening public connection to nature. As they point out, people are more likely to protect what they understand and care about.

As more walking routes become available online, it has never been easier to explore the Danish landscape—from coastal dunes to rolling farmland to peaceful forests. Just put one foot in front of the other. As many Danes now like to say, you simply have to keep walking.
