Hovedstadens Letbane opened along its full length on Saturday, August 22, with free travel all day and a public celebration at Gladsaxe Rådhus.
The final section of the capital region’s light rail entered service on Saturday, opening the whole line to passengers. According to DR, the day is being marked with a folkefest, or public festival, at Gladsaxe Rådhus.
DR reported on August 6 that the celebration was placed in Gladsaxe because the municipality is getting six new stops on the line. With the last stretch in operation, trains run the full route between Ishøj in the south and Lundtofte in the north.
The operator, Hovedstadens Letbane, confirmed the date on June 4, stating that the line would open in full length on August 22. Figures published by letbaner.dk on June 20 show that the opening adds 17 new stations, bringing the total to 29 stations along the route.
Lyngby-Taarbæk Kommune said the opening program includes local activities along the route, an inauguration ride, and a ceremony in Gladsaxe. The municipality also stated that travel on the light rail is free all day on the opening date.
Opening day timings
DTU published its own program for the two stations at its Lyngby campus. As stated by the university on August 19, the campus celebrations begin at 10:00, and the light rail was expected to be fully operational between Ishøj and Lundtofte at around 11:30.
The line connects municipalities along Ring 3 in the western and northern suburbs of Copenhagen. It links a series of S-train stations and residential and workplace areas outside the city center, including the DTU campus.
Earlier confirmation of the August date
The August opening had been signaled months in advance. CPH Post reported in March 2026 that the second part of the light rail would open in August, allowing passengers to travel from Ishøj to Lundtofte for the first time.
The operator has tied the timing to regulatory clearance for the remaining stretch. Per Din Letbane, approval from Trafikstyrelsen, the Danish Civil Aviation and Railway Authority, allowed the full line to open as planned on August 22.
For residents in the corridor, the new stations create direct links between suburbs that previously required travel through central Copenhagen. Many of the stops sit next to existing S-train stations, bus terminals, and cycling routes in the area.
The main event at Gladsaxe Rådhus forms the official ceremony for the completed line. According to Lyngby-Taarbæk Kommune, music and other experiences are part of the day’s program at locations along the route.
