Denmark’s North Jutland Region faces serious allegations of ambulance data manipulation. Officials have promised a full investigation to determine if emergency records were falsified to meet political targets.
Concerns Over Manipulated Ambulance Records
The chairman of the North Jutland Regional Council, Mads Duedahl, has announced that the region will launch a thorough investigation into accusations that ambulance data may have been manipulated to give a misleading impression of readiness. The case follows reports that rescuers were asked to register ambulances as stationed in towns such as Løkken, even when they were elsewhere.
According to several anonymous ambulance workers, this practice allegedly helped the region appear to meet political requirements on response readiness. The accusations suggest the manipulation could have created a false sense of emergency coverage in some areas.
Political and Administrative Accountability
Duedahl, who not only leads Region North Jutland but also chairs the national association of Danish Regions, said the issue was deeply concerning. He emphasized that every area promised a stationed ambulance must genuinely have one, and that misleading the public would seriously undermine trust in Denmark’s emergency system.
The region manages its own ambulance operations across more than a dozen bases, each with assigned vehicles for specific time slots. For example, one unit is supposed to be stationed in Løkken during weekends from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. However, video evidence and testimonies from seven ambulance staff indicate that no vehicle was present during those hours.
Unclear Motives and Possible Misunderstandings
Officials remain uncertain about how or why such a practice started. Duedahl said that although there could be practical explanations, such as covering absences in other districts, instructing crews to falsely log their location could not be justified. He described the matter as “very serious” and said he intends to uncover whether anyone acted intentionally or out of misunderstanding.
Because of the sensitivity of the claims, the rescuers who spoke to journalists did so under strict anonymity, citing fears of workplace backlash. They expressed concern that this manipulation might delay emergency services and potentially endanger lives.
