Aula shut down October 21 after security risk

Kombit, the municipalities’ shared IT organization, shut down the school communication platform Aula on Wednesday afternoon after being alerted to a potential security risk. It is not known when the platform will be available again.

According to reporting by DR, Kombit closed Aula on the afternoon of October 21, 2026, because of a potential security risk. Kombit’s press chief, Lars Skov Granerud, confirmed the closure to the news agency Ritzau. Logging in to Aula was not possible on Wednesday.

Per DR, Kombit was made aware of a potential technical security risk in an underlying element used in several of its solutions. Earlier in the afternoon, a number of municipal IT systems were shut down fully or partly. Those included the municipal library system and tools that municipal employees use for tasks such as paying out benefits.

Kombit says it does not yet have a full overview

Granerud stressed that the problem has not been solved, and that Kombit still lacks a complete picture of the situation. According to DR, all other systems should now be in full operation, although disruptions may still occur. What triggered the security risk is still unknown.

As reported by Politiken, Aula was shut down completely, while the library system was only partly affected. Politiken also notes Kombit’s statement that it does not have a complete overview of the incident. JydskeVestkysten confirms the Aula shutdown and presents it as part of a wider closure of municipal IT solutions following the potential security risk.

Neither Kombit nor the outlets covering the incident have said how long Aula will stay closed. DR states plainly that the duration of the closure is unknown. Kombit has not published information about what, if anything, happened to data in the affected systems.

What the Aula shutdown means for international parents and school staff

Aula is the platform used for communication between employees, parents and pupils at Denmark’s folkeskoler and in dagtilbud, the municipal daycare system. For families who moved to Denmark, Aula is usually the main channel for messages from the class teacher, the daycare, and the school administration. It is operated on behalf of the municipalities by Kombit, the IT organization owned by the Danish municipalities.

While Aula is closed, messages sent through the platform cannot be read or sent, because login is unavailable. DR reports that the cause has not been identified and that the reopening time is unknown. Kombit has not announced an alternative channel for school and daycare communication, so information from your child’s school or daycare may arrive by other means until the platform returns.

The shutdown also touched systems beyond schools. According to DR, solutions used by municipal employees for tasks including benefit payments were closed fully or partly on Wednesday afternoon, before Kombit said most systems were running again. For residents waiting on a municipal case or payment, Kombit’s own statement is that disruptions can still occur.

What is not yet known is as relevant as what is. Kombit has not said whether the potential risk involves personal data, and no authority has published findings about the underlying element behind the issue. DR notes that Kombit itself does not yet have a full overview, which means further information is expected to come from Kombit and the municipalities rather than from individual schools.
